If you do have true ocd, monotherapy with any of the benzos is usually not indicated.

i have OCD and am currently depressed as well, so i'm dealing with both. i was hoping that i could take a xanax to alleviate the dreaded thoughts. oh well!

have you given an ssri or even effexor a good trial? I too have depression and ocd. I am not on effexor right now but when I was, it seemed to keep most of my OCD in check, and I was also taking klonopin, which in and of itself (IMO) probably more effective for OCD symtomology-but like I said before benzos really are not useful in OCD by themselves. hope that helps let me know!

i'm taking celexa and wellbutrin XL, but i went off them for about 3 weeks and started having problems last week. i restarted the meds last tuesday, so i'm in that awful waiting stage. last week i was really obsessing and then saturday i woke up and had that overall horrible feeling and knew the depression had set in. i haven't been obsessing as much as last week, but at least last week i could eat and function. the celexa & wellbutrin have worked well for me, so i'm hoping they continue to do the job. i appreciate your input. :)

Why did you quit taking them?

I'm taking Celexa 40 mg, and I'm back on Lamictal 25 mg after trying Trileptal. The Trileptal trial made me lose my memory, and I still feel slowed down. It's been four days since I had a dose. I felt a little up yesterday, but started to feel depressed last night, and today I'm in a low-grade funk.

The most depressing thing is I feel I can't focus, learn, or remember sharply.

I hope this goes away... :-(

Is that from the depression or the medication?

My inability to read, learn, and remember are the most frustrating features of my depression. I am incredibly stupid.

Scott I totally understand the above statement.. to the max degree. My dr. says *nothing* is wrong with my memory.
I use to have such a razor sharp memory and it is very depressing that when we are so depressed that we can't just have access to the knowledge that we just learned. People are always telling me to read this book or that book for help...they just don't get it! They say then why can you remember all the reading and research on the internet and remember that stuff and I tell them I don't remember most of it. Thank God for bookmarks and favorites and desktop icons :) I know that I can learn stuff but do not retain most of it. It is so damn hard at times because I know that I am intelligent and it seem like I just can't access the right stuff, when I want to. It further makes it more frustrating when I try to explain how I am feeling and I just can't recall data which in turn fuels the depression. We are doing better than we think though. By the way you are NOT stupid! From reading lots of your posts You come across very intelligent and educated (IMO)and others I'm sure. The stupid feeling is the deprssion speaking! Anyhow just wanted you to know that you are not alone!
take care

I've found Xanax useful for occasional help with obsessive worry (0.5 - 1.0 mg) but I develop tolerance to it quickly. It's great as an "emergency" med. Klonopin is much better for me (for regular use), and I also do well with Lamictal for its general calming effects (although I find it very subtle).

I can't tolerate SSRIs at all, but a close relative had fairly good results with Luvox (an SSRI) for OCD. She also uses Xanax on an as-needed basis (rarely, like me).
