I'm taking Parnate and got blasted with first-ever attack of shingles (herpes zoster). I was prescribed NEURONTIN for the pain. I don't see anything in the Parnate patient insert about Neurontin, and don't see anything in the Neurontin insert about it being contraindicaated with MAOIS--except that one sentence bothers me, "Neurontin caused a slight decrease in monamine transmitters in vitro." I placed a call to my doctor in New York, but until I hear from him, I would very much appreciate hearing anyone's knowledge about Neurontin & MAOIs, or first-hand experience. I need something for the pain ASAP. Thanks to anyone who is knowledgeable

I take 1200 mg. Neurontin and 20 mg. of Marplan at night. There doesn't seem to be any interaction.
Some of the warnings about MAOI interactions are either theoretical or have been reported only a few times.
I think you should be okay. I hope the Neurontin helps. Sorry about the shingles. I've heard they can be very painful.

Here I am again--the Neurontin worked out great; had no adverse reactions. Got a good night's sleep, and feel loads better today. I'm hoping that the worst is over with the shingles also. Thanks again for your note. You can see how rare the combination of an MAOI and Neurontin is--you were the only person to reply to my post and my pdoc said that he has no other patients who have tried this combination.
