Bipolar II

Posted by tommytomtom on May 23, 2004, at 18:34:43

I have tried a number of mood stabilizers, along with Celexa for Bipolar II. Each of the mood stabilizers has caused side effects with which I can not put up.

So far, the only thing I have taken that had no side effects and made me feel better was Klonopin. Naturally, the doc said the Klonopin was for short term use only .

Is anyone being treated for Bipolar II with just Klonopin?

Thanks.

Hi tommytomtom,

In answer to your question, no... I have bipolar 2, although prefer to call it manic-depressive illness (which is basically a semantics issue.) Anyway, what mood stabilizer's have you tried? How do you feel when you are not on them? IMHO, mood stabilizers are really a necessity as the illness can get progressively worse (delusions, paranoia, et al.) What are the side effects you can't put up with?

All the best,
Man-oh-man

Yup, I was for awhile. Klonopin is the ONLY benzo that is indicated as a mood stabiliser for bipolar. Eventually I had to add Trileptal which has helped a lot, but I take 4 mg of Klonopin a day and I am not addicted and the dosage has remained the same for a few years. Klonopin also acts a antidepressant too.

I take Paxil, Lamictal and Klonopin and together they are really working for me. It has taken about 9 months to get the right meds/doses. I take about 2 mg. of Klonopin throughout the day, one or two at a time at .5 mg. I take 25 mg. Paxil CR and 200 mg. Lamictal. (one at a.m., one p.m.)
So far so good. The only side effect I seem to have is some weight gain from the Paxil. Otherwise I feel great. I think sometimes we just have to put up with the side effects because anything is better than hypomania/mania and major depression (at least for me).
My doc. is very comfortable with giving me the klonopin. I would find a doc. that is fine using a benzo. Some are and some aren't. My husband sees someone who would never prescribe them. My doc is conservative but she thinks they work really well for me.

Good luck.
