tapering from 50mg of Zoloft to 25mg too fast?

Posted by SDA on May 22, 2004, at 2:54:15

As the topic states, I'm considering stepping down from 50 to 25mg of Zoloft. It did its job to a satisfactory degree, but is probably just holding me back cognitively at this point. I was originally on 75mg, and went down to 50mg a couple of weeks ago. So far I've had none of the classic "brain zaps". The past couple days I've had head fuzziness starting around noon and lasting into the evening.

So does it sound to you guys that stepping down to 25mg would be a wise choice? I'd talk to my psychiatrist, but I know he would just badger me for wanting to cut back. I might try anyway though.

If you are cutting back, I think going from 50 to 25 would be the prudent thing to do, but I would still suggest discussing this with your pdoc first. My own experience with Zoloft and Effexor was that I never suffered any withdrawal symptoms on Zoloft regardless of whether or not I tapered, and I always suffered withdrawal symptoms on Effexor regardless of whether I tapered or not.

Yeah. I've gone off of 200mg (!) of zoloft cold turky before with little or no withdrawal effects to speak of. Luck is definitely on my side, but I don't want to push it again.

I went down to 25mg yesterday. Its a little hard to say how its effecting me since my sleeping is kind of screwed up. Tonight I'll make it a priority to get a good night's sleep. If I still feel the same/worse, then I'll go back up I guess.
