input on symptoms of panic attacks

Posted by patricia leahy on April 30, 2004, at 20:47:35

i was sitting at my pc about 6 years ago when all of a sudden i couldnt see straight my heart raced i got vertigo, started sweating profusely and had the urge to use the bathroom really bad, ended up in er, after hours they said i was having panic attacks. now 6 years later they still kind of come out of nowhere sometimes i feel them coming on most times do not, sometimes get really weak and feel like i could pass out and break out in a cold sweat. do any of you have these same symptoms? get dizzy for no reason and feel like you walk like a drunk? started klonopin a week ago, starting to feel better. but wonder how long to really kick in and at what dose seems the most useful? i take .25 in am and .25 at night. but at time still feel a breakthrough attack trying to edge in. would appreciate any and all responses.

chemist here... let the klonopin take hold for a week, and i suspect - predict - that you will be okay....all the best, and stay in touch, chemist

hi there.....i had earlier asserted that klonopin was ``notorious'' for leveling-off at 6 months and for an increased dose after that. having read some more on the subject - and, equally if not more importantly - read the responses of those who have had very, very good success with a steady dosing of klonopin for years, i will have to say that my earlier assertion appears to be ungrounded. my *opinion* is that once you find the right dose for your comfort level - and this could take a little time, and there may be some tweaking of the dose if, for instance, life circumstances for you bring on extra anxiety or decreased anxiety (hoping for the latter) - you should be able to stay there without dose escalation for a good run of it.....hope this helps, and all the best, chemist

hi patricia....just a clarification of who i am, from your post...first, who i am not: a doctor of medicine or an employee of a pharmaceutical company. i hold a ph.d. in a chemistry-oriented branch of theoretical physics. my work has been in academia and the private sector, and i have been working on biophysical and drug-related issues for more than 5 years now. most of my drug-related work is in the area of specific drugs/receptors for neurodegenerative disorders and mood disorders. almost all of my information comes from my own personal experiences, results from clinical studies i was/am privvy to disclose, the peer-reviewed journal articles in my files, the PDR, and pubmed for gleaning abstracts/publications. just wanted to clarify, all the best, chemist

When i was having what was first DX'd as 'panic attacks', Klonopin was of no assistance whatsoever, however the dose was increased, or the length of time i continued taking it.
When i was finally correctly DX'd as having PTSD induced 'terror episodes' and RX'd Xanax to be taken sublingually at the onset of an episode, was my therapy finally able to progress, and i was able to "get a grip".

Hope this helps. Panic OR terror episodes are not only disruptive and frightening, but can be terribly destructive to the body's chemical balances, and in the long run, devastating to the immune system. Persevere with your doctor. (pdoc or MD?)

Escher

Hmmmm...
After re-reading your symptoms, i would question your dx with your doctor.
Vertigo, the urge to go to the bathroom, weakness like you could pass out, and feeling like you walk like a drunk are NOT symptoms of panic attacks, but are very serious indications of other possible dx's.
i would push for some testing done that addresses these specific symptoms, if it were me.

Keep us posted? i would be interested in knowing how you fare~

Mobius,
Escher

Hi Patrica,

When you say you have "the urge to go to the bathroom", are we talking about No1's or No2's?, to put it crudely :)

I use to suffer badly from a very anxious bowel that would send me racing to the toilet in pain when I was under some kind of social stress. Thankfully, some of the drugs I take have got this under control.

Cheers,
Panda.
