Input on what works best with anger depressed

Posted by keglermac on April 28, 2004, at 9:20:26

My doctor started me last October on Prozac because I was having trouble with depression, but mostly with mood swings. I tended to get very angry for no apparent reason then would get really depressed. The Prozac actually worked once I got up in dosage, I think 40, but my doc wanted to get me on Lexapro because he said there would be less side effects. I don't really remember any bad side effects with Prozac other then once a day I would get a shiver, and I was really really happy.
Lexapro however did nothing for my depression, even going to 20 mg a day. It did however keep me in check with my anger. The worst part however was that I could never attain orgasm during sex, and we're talking after hours here which normally wouldn't be so bad but after awhile it sucks.
So then my doc moves out of town and hands me over to his partner who puts me on Wellbutrin. Nothing, absolutely nothing except maybe getting rid of some of my depression and a constant pain in my jaw and a sense of vertigo all the time.
I just wanted to know if anyone has any success with anything or a combination of things when they have had this anger and depression problem. I'm thinking about going back to Prozac if nothing else.

Prozac is supposed to be good for anger. Many people combine the prozac with tegrotol if the anger is still not under check.

Oh yeah, the sooner anyone can give me some input the better, I am out of Wellbutrin XL and have an appointment this afternoon to discuss changing with my Doc, because the anger is actually getting worse like it used to be.

Although I did have success on prozac for irritability and anger, I found Effexor was a lot better at treating this. Have you tried effexor?

I would agree with you that Lexapro was not a great drug for this. Wellbutrin will most likely exacerbate your anger issues unless it is augemented with something else. So I would not recommed going on a higher dose of wellbutrin at this point without exploring other options first.

No I have not tried Effexor just because I have heard all the bad things about it, like the tremors, the withdraws (cause one day I hope to be able to live without this stuff) and the other harsh side effects. It seems like all I hear is bad things about it especially in this post.

I've tried every SSRI besides luvox and found that effexor is more tolerable than any of them, especially in terms of sedation. And in terms of efficacy, the ssri's never came close to its benefit as an antidepressant for me.

Remember to take all the posts on this board with a grain of salt. the only reason that most of us have found this board is because we are treatment-resistant types and have a laundry list of failed attempts with medications and resulting adverse effects.

Effexor is the most likely next step after a failed trial with one or more SSRIs. So it seems the logical choice for you at this point.

oh, and by the way, there is a withdrawl from effexor -- as there is for the ssris as well. but done properly, you will not experience any severe adverse effects. I myself have come off effexor three times. A cross-taper period onto prozac is probably the best strategy.

I'd get off the wellbutrin xl in the meantime or keep it at a low dose of 150 mg while you start a new med. you can always add it back in later.
