Wellbutrin withdrawal???

Posted by simus on April 12, 2004, at 23:47:37

I was just wondering, has anyone been on just 150mg Wellbutrin and had trouble when going off of it?

Hi Simus,

I'm on 150 mgs of Wellbutrin to see how I like it. My pdoc said I could stop taking it at any time without tapering off and not experience any withdrawl. I think it's one of those rare meds that has no withdrawl effects if you stop taking it cold turkey.

Mine said the same, but he was also surprised that I had withdrawals on SSRIs. ???

Hi Simus,

Some SSRI's cause withdrawl and others don't. (I hope your pdoc knows that.) For example, anyone can stop taking Prozac cold turkey and won't experience any side effects. But people on Lexapro have to taper off of it very slowly because if it is stopped suddenly, it can cause withdrawl.

With SSRI's I think withdrawl is related to how long the med stays in your system. Prozac stays in your system for a very, very long time. Lexapro does not, which is why it can cause withdraw.

Wellbutrin is a different story though. It really is in a class all by itself. It's an anti-depressant but not an SSRI. (You probably know this already.)

If you want to stop taking Wellbutrin, I would suggest that you try going without it for a couple of days and see how you feel. If it causes a lot of discomfort you can always start taking it again.
