Question to 40mg Prozac users.

Posted by jms600 on April 10, 2004, at 15:35:07

Hello,

My P/doc has told me to up my current Prozac dose from 20mg to 40mg to help my apathy/lethargy and my anxiety.

Trouble is (believe it or not) Prozac makes me quite drowsy in the day and I'm concerned that if I go upto 40mg this will get worse.

Anyone else tried this for apathy/lethargy and anxiety? Was it of any use? Were there any noticeable improvements going from 20mg to 40mg?

I find there's a rather robust difference between 20 and 40mg of fluoxetine. I was on 20mg for a few months up until six weeks ago when I figured I had gotten all I could out of the medication and decided to just stick with my "mainstay" meds for a while (Adderall XR and Klonopin). I also had the doctor add on a bit of Provigil just to see if there were any synergism between it and the amphetamines. There wasn't. So two weeks ago I went back and had him place me on fluoxetine 40mg. The first five days I took a "booster dose" of 80mg each morning. Since the fourth or fifth day (even now that I'm down to 40mg) I've been able to do something I haven't in a while -- give up my morning coffee! The Prozac seems to have an "on command" stimulant effect that is entirely separate from the antidepressant effects at this dose. I'm sure that's due to more dopaminergic and/or noradrenergic activity. I certainly plan to raise it to 60mg in a couple more weeks.

Not a single side effect, by the way. That's proof (to me) that Prozac is absolutely an atypical SSRI! I couldn't handle being on any of the others to save my life!

I just wanted to note that, at this point, I'm not personally concerned with Prozac poop-out. It seems I know enough people who've taken it long-term or who still are taking it (many within my family, no less) and it seems that those in my family haven't gone through the terrible poop-out thing.

Even if the 40 mg eventually poops out, it's no big deal. Just go up to 60. A lot of people take more than 60 mg of Prozac.
