Augmenting with Thyroxine?

Posted by Sad Panda on April 7, 2004, at 10:46:13

Hi All,

Saw my doctor today & got the results of my blood tests. Eveything is nearly normal except my glucose is at the high limit, so I am getting a glucose tolerance test. Other thing is my TSH is on the upper end of the scale, so I was wondering had anyone taken Thyroxine?

I have just spent the last 4 weeks trying to tolerate 300mg of Effexor XR, but I can't, so I am back to 225mg with 30mg of Remeron. 300mg made it easier to get up & get around, but it started to erode my mind & it pushed my BP up from 120/80 to 130/90.

If anyone has taken Thyroxine for depression, how much did it increase your heart rate & BP?

All advice appreciated in advance. :)

Cheers,
Panda.

Hi, I was on Cytomel some time ago...it's T3--Thyroxine is T4. It was added to boost/augment my 375mg of Effexor. I did not have any problems while taking it.

Hi terrics,

I have no idea. I just have TSH values.

11/02 was 3.8 mU/L
09/03 was 6.0 mU/L
04/04 was 2.9 mU/L

The exceptable range on the lab sheet is supposed to be 0.4-4.0 although I have read recently that Endocrinologists have revised that to 0.3-3.0 & that some Pychiatrists aim to have their patients in the lowest quater of the range??

I take Effexor & Remeron and I am happy. Before begining any AD's I was apathetic & lethargic, but now I just don't care. :) I thought I needed some increase in NE activity, but now I think taking a low dose of Thyroxine maybe something worth trying.

Any & all help & thoughts appreciated,
Cheers,
Panda.

Hi terrics...if you're asking me as well, I also have no knowledge of my numbers. I was simply told they were "within the normal range." I'm not sure but I believe the generaly work ups prescribed by docs (initial ones) don't dig deep enough to measure levels accurately...I think I heard that somewhere before... Oh yes, from a friend who has a thyroid disorder. She had to fight to see an endocrinologist to finally get to the bottom of her problems.

Are these pdocs prescribing thyroxine because yours is low or for some other reason? I want to check this out further. terrics

My doc prescribed it to augment or "boost" Effexor. It seemed to help. I had reached the therapeutic ceiling (375mg) and my doc didn't want to go higher as I was having some potentially serious problems. I've also and am currently using the combination of Wellbutrin and Effexor in the same manner. It's just an interesting fact that the Cytomel would have the effect.
