SSRIs v Tricyclics - TCA users please!

Posted by jms600 on March 29, 2004, at 15:09:17

As a follow up to my last posting about SSRIs making you feel flat, maybe a swich to the Tricyclics may help?

I'm on Prozac, but I don't know which drug to try in the Tricyclic range which is equally as efficient & stimulant, has the least side effects AND won't make me feel flat, but just normal??

I'm thinking of Imipramine but I don't know if its as stimulating as Prozac and I don't know what the side effects are like.

I feel fairly letharic and apathetic, so the last thing I need is a drug which will make me drowsy.

Any suggestions??

I would suggest desipramine, as it probably has the fewest side effects of the tricyclics and is one of only two that would be considered activating, the other one being Vivactil (protriptyline). Imipramine is a good drug but is considered to have at least some sedative qualities; I believe you would find it much more sedating than Prozac.

If Prozac (or any SSRI) works for you, but makes you apathetic, consider adding the TCA Desipramine. If you need a little help sleeping, consider Nortriptyline before bed & you should be stimulated by breakfast with a bit of luck.

If you want just one drug, Clomipramine is a potent SRI & NRI but has more side effects that TCA's are known for.

Cheers,
Panda.

I've tried Imipramine at a very low dose (10mg) for just few days. I must say it was very stimulating for me, maybe too much (but I may have bipolar issues). I think it's considered more stimulating than Prozac because it's used for ADHD. Anyway, it's just a different kind of stimulation. I don't think flatness would be a problem, noradrenergic meds don't have this kind of side-effect from what I've read. And sexual dysfunction are less likely to occurr. Regards,
Francesco
