Need some advice

Posted by LastDyingWish on March 28, 2004, at 23:49:28

I recently met with a pdoc and he prescribed wellbutrin for my depression. after reading the posts on the site iam reluctant to try it. I believe my depression to be caused by ecstacy use in the past. My pdoc assures me that an AD will help re-regulate some of the damage that has been done.. does anyone know if this is true. Can a stimulant possible do more damage ?
Ive had anxiety in the past..but it has gotten alot better over the last year. My main problem is lack of sex drive. I still dont feel like myself. Any advice would be helpful and much appreciated.

My pdoc also wanted me to take Wellbutrin [added to my Prozac]. [150 XL to start]. I took it two days and that was enough for me. I could not sleep and that's after taking .5 Xanax. Also, I had constipation with bleeding. I never have problems like that, ever. I think Wellbutrin tends toward anxiety. My friend took it added to her Prozac and she was so wound up, she had to stop. It's not a good drug for most people though some benefit from it; some docs don't prescribe it as the side effects outweigh benefits for many people. You could try it, but think long and hard about it. I'm glad your anxiety has lessened......Wellbutrin might bring that back. Think about it.
Regards,
Joy

There are always going to be disappointing stories posted about any medication. But keep in mind that Wellbutrin has an excellent reputation as an antidepressant. It's also very safe in normal dosages.

<<I think it's worth a try. I've been on WB since August, and yes, there were some weird side effects, and some anxiety that was difficult to tolerate. And no, I'm not 100% normal and I'm coping with SEs that may not ever go away. But I am coping, and the WEllbutrin has REALLY helped curb my depression. Not perfect, but so much better than before. Someone else posted that not every drug is good for everyone. Which is so true. But it's worth trying for a bit....

Good luck,

Susan

I still dont feel like myself. Any advice would be helpful and much appreciated.

I hope you are starting to feel better!
Did the pdoc actually say that ecstasy use caused the problems (necessitating an AD) that you are having now? The only reason I ask is because I took a lot of ecstasy about 5-7 years ago, and my anxiety didn't show up until recently. My own pdoc told me that if my anxiety was ecstasy related it would have shown up much sooner. Just wondering...

My pdoc assumed my condition was probably due to ecstacy use.. i explained to him that i never had any problems in the past. I dont think i was even aware of mental disorders back then.. life was good. I used e for about a year, every weekend.. and occasionally other drugs too. After coming out of that, i felt like a different person. Things are alot better now tho. But not 100%.
I appreciate everyones response, thanks

Good luck with everything. Sometimes I am amazed that I actually sought out drugs for fun, now that I need to take them to keep my mind together I can't imagine recreational usage. How is your medication working for you?

Hi LastDyingWish,

I'm a strong advocate of AD's because they have really helped me to feel like myself again. (Currently taking 100 mgs of Wellbutrin and 15 mgs of Lexapro.) I think you should really give it a try and wait to see what happens.

A lot of other ADs can cause a person to loose interest in sex. To counter that many pdocs prescribe Wellbutrin. I think starting you out on Wellbutrin was a good move on the part of your pdoc.

Also, keep in mind that technically Wellbutrin is not a stimulant. It's in a class of drugs all by itself because it works differently than most ADs.

You might also ask your pdoc about Klonopin. It's not an antidepressant, but can relieve a lot of your symptoms. If Wellbutrin feels too stimulating, adding Klonopin to your "cocktail" can be very helpful because Klonopin has a very calming effect.

You're headed in the right direction to regaining your "old self." I know what it's like to loose that, but the good news is you can get it back.

K.

i havent started the wellbutrin yet.. iam going to wait until spring semester is over, iam very involved in school right now. i think summer would be a better time to experiment. i just started taking the supplement NADH, it is supposed to affect dopamine.
