Abilify is Great

Posted by EAL on March 20, 2004, at 13:24:28

Hi!
I have been on zyprexa for several years and it was wonderful for psychiatric issues, but I gained about 40 pounds. I was always hungry and slept about 12 hours a day.

I have decreased zyprexa and added abilify. It is great. I only sleep 8 hours a day. And it has really diminished my appetite. Sometimes I forget to eat a meal.

When I first went on abilify, I developed flu like symptoms, but I just kept taking because they said it might go away in a week or two. ANd it did.

I am very pleased with abilify. I have tons of energy. Sometimes I'm up at 6 or 7 am (with zyprexa I often slept until 10 -11 am)

I would like to hear from other people on abilify.

Hi. How long to kick in, how much to take, and for what dx? Glad it's working for you.

It started to work in about 5 days. meaning I began to sleep and eat less in about 5 days.
As I mentioned at first I developed flu-like symptoms, but these subsided in about 3 days.

I'd be interested to know if these benefits continue, esp. after 3 months or so. Please keep us posted.

I took it last January for two weeks and got restlessness (akathasia). I used some leftover neurotin, which eased the sensation for a short time of an hour or so at higher doses of Neurontin. But I don't like Neurontin that much all the time.

Does restlessness often subside after a few weeks of taking an antipsychotic?

I've heard of Geodon, but didn't bother to bring it up with my doc, and discontinued the stuff. I was taking it for social anxiety, and suspect it motivated me to go to the library a bit (especially on a Saturday!) -- hard for me with my ADD and poor study habits.
