Luvox

Posted by CareBear04 on March 22, 2004, at 18:23:43

Has anyone tried this drug? I'm currently on Zoloft, and my pdoc mentioned switching to Luvox at some point to get more of the anti-obsessive effect. I saw that Luvox is only approved for anxiety... does it have antidepressant properties as well? Is it activating or sedating? Please let me know if you have any experience with Luvox. Thanks!

It's another SSRI but seems to be hardly prescribed at all anymore. It does have antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties, as do all of the SSRIs. Nausea seems to be a notable adverse effect of this particular drug. I have no direct experience with it myself.

I actually liked this med because I had very few side effects (normal mild SSRI effects if anything)

I have been on Luvox for 8 years. When I started the brand name, Luvox, was still around. However, that was dropped a few years ago and I had to start getting fluvoxamine, the generic, from various makers. I am not sure if the brand name ever came back into the US market or not. I still use the generic.

I had zero side effects. It has been as good as any other ssri for me. It helps with anxiety and depression.
Prozac made me irritable and explosive which was scary. That is why i went to Luvox to begin with and then stuck with it. take care.

Do you take divided or single dose? If single dose, do you take it morning or bedtime?

I was on Luvox for about three years and in general found it quite effective for depression and social phobia. It did give me insomnia, but I took trazodone to counter that and had no problem falling asleep. The more troublesome side effect for me was sexual. It quashed my libido, numbed my groin and sex organs, make it virtually impossible to get an erection and pretty much eliminated orgasm. And if I somehow got into a sexual situation during the period I was taking it, I found the sex not just unsatisfying but actually unpleasant. I've had sexual side effects from other antidepressants but none so extreme as with Luvox. It got me through a difficult transition in my life, but the sexual side effects were ultimately unacceptable.

I take a single dose at bedtime. It makes me sleep well.
