I NEED A LOT OF ADVICE about TRAZODONE

Posted by Pandabear on March 20, 2004, at 21:17:55

My psychiatrist just put me on Trazodone and I know NOTHING about it. All i know is that it is a anti depressant..but what i want to know about it is...are their any bad side effects ...do you gain weight or loose weight? What lab tests are required...(i hate getting my blood drawn and have not had to have it drawn for many months...)Im so sick of being put on different meds...i dont want to be on this medicine at all im already on lamictal and it is helping me tremendously...i dont see why i need 2 anti depressants...they are trying to get it to help me sleep..but its doing the opposite..im not tired. When i was taking seroquel, I was out within an hour and a half..and I was taking it to help me sleep and to stopp obsessing...but now..im unable to sleep...i dont know what to do. I just need some info about Trazodone...if anyone can help me it would be great. Thanks.

Panda:

I was on traz for about a year. Of all the many ADs I've tried, traz had the fewest side effects (for me). No weight gain, no insomnia, no sexual side effects. Traz gave me only one problem: sedation. In a big way. I would take it before bed, and I'd still have problems the next morning getting going.

If the new meds I'm trying don't work out, I'm thinking of going back to traz and asking my doc for a stimulant.

Well I had to get out my notebook to look up Trazedone becuz like the other 50 plus meds I have taken in the past 20 yrs, I was SURE I took it but not for long.. It was given to me to help me sleep. I had severe insomnia which I associated with symptoms of perimenopause...Anyway, it didn't work. I pitched it after a week or so. I think it actually made me worse;I tooke half a pill (?) and it kept me up til 5 AM I finally got some sleep when the pdoc gave me remeron and sonata. The traz was given to me when I BEGGED my "so-called" menopause specialist for SOMETHING to help me sleep...BTW she is not my gyn any longer.. Poor young fool: she won't be a Menopause Specialist for about ten more years when she HERSELF personally experiences menopause... I have depression only ...not ADD or BP, etc.

Hi Pandabear:

I have been on trazadone for quite some time. The reason I take it is for sleep. I have experienced no negative side effects from it. Except, when I first took it I could not get out of bed in the morning. BUT, that passed as I continued to take it. Sonata and Ambien were too addictive for me. Trazadone has been the safest alternative for sleep. If it is not helping you sleep then maybe you need a higher dose, because it is definetly sedating.

I've read that it's a very sedating AD,and good for people who have insomnia. But it was found to cause a very dangerous side effect called priapism in males(about 1 in 10,000 or something like that),so if you're a male, beware!

Hi Pandabear,

Skip my post if you don't want to read anything negative about trazedone. My brother took it for 3 months to help with insomnia and it actually caused him to SKIP rem sleep - one of the most important sleep cycles. It really put him on edge, he was angry and impatient all of the time. When he realized what it was doing to him, he quit cold turkey and went through horrible withdrawl symptoms.

Trazedone may work wonders for you, because of course all of these meds effect everyone so differently. I hope you have a good experience with Trazedone, just pay attention to the way your body feels. Good luck!

K.

I, too had the opposite se on Trazadone-I quit after a week or so because I felt so wired, like I had just had a pot of coffee. Made the insomnia worse.

For most people it's supposed to help insomnia, though.
