WELLBUTRIN and Vision

Posted by SandyWeb on March 17, 2004, at 17:19:41

Has anyone experienced vision problems since being on Wellbutrin? After I started this med, my eyes went from perfect to BAD practically overnight. I now need reading glasses or the print is just a blur. And it progressively gets worse where even the computer screen and keyboard is beginning to get blurry.

One of the side effects mentioned is "blurry vision", but this seems extreme. Does it go away?? I'll have to drop Wellbutrin if this continues. I can't see!

This is not really that common a side effect for Wellbutrin. Are you taking any other drugs that the Wellbutrin might be interacting with?

Hey there Todd,

I'm known as the patient with the unusual reactions!! Lol!! I always seem to have side effects that are rare. Why the heck is that??

Anyways, I didn't take my Wellbutrin this morning when I got up. I went to classes, and lo and behold, my eyesight was almost normal. I didn't need reading glasses at all. Then I come home, take the Wellbutrin mid-afternoon, and lo and behold, my eyesight is blurry within an hour.

I think my little experiment points to Wellbutrin being the culprit.

As for other meds, I'm just taking the usual mix:
Celexa
Neurontin
Inderal LA

None of those meds should have any type of interaction with Wellbutrin. So I'm just the lucky rare-reaction girl! I can't decide whether to continue with Wellbutrin or not.

I guess if it were me, I would probably not continue with it unless it had some kind of unique and indispensable benefit. The only drug I've experienced blurry vision on was Vivactil (protriptyline), which is not bizarre in that case because this drug has severe anticholinergic effects. It was an excellent stimulant and one of the more effective antidepressants I've tried, and while I was willing to put up with the blurry vision, the anticholinergic effects caused some sexual issues that I was not willing to tolerate, so I wound up dumping it.

Wellbutrin can cause blurred vision. I also experience this side effect and Wellbutrin is the only med. that I'm taking. I don't have the bottle infront of me but I think it does have a yellow sticker listing dizziness and blurred vision as a side effect.

I've been on the SR version for almost 3 weeks now so I'm hoping all the side effects will subside soon. I've read other posts which seem to believe that week 3-4 is the magic week for full benefit.

Like yourself I seem to fall in the rare category for side effects with some medications.

Not So. There are a small number of people (less than 1%) who cannot take Wellbutrin and an SSRI together due to a metabolic defect. Prozac is the biggest culprit; I should know, the combo made me psychotic and I had to spend four days in the "rubber room"! I now take Wellbutrin SR, without the SSRI and things are fine.

So I'm just the lucky rare-reaction girl! I can't decide whether to continue with Wellbutrin or not.
