Nardil and wisdom teeth removal

Posted by cosis on March 7, 2004, at 0:44:12

Anything special I should be aware of if I am getting my wisdom teeth removed on Nardil? I am thinking I will most likely be put out for the procedure........

I know I have seen warnings about no general anesthesia within 10 days of Nardil use. So that would suggest you would need to go off of it before getting the procedure. You might want to call your dentist and inform him/her about the Nardil. I did that before I went in for crowns as I was concerned about what type of anesthetic he would use. Also, what type of pain med he would prescribe for after (he gave me Vicuprofen). My dentist looked it up when he got the message and was prepared for me.

Good luck!

I'm taking Parnate and whenever I have dental work done that calls for the conventional pain killer, I simply tell the dentist to give it to me without the epinephrine in it. Supposedly, the epinephrine enables the analgesic qualities to last longer, so several injections might be necessary over the course of the work. If the dentist can do the extractions and think that the pain level won't be great, and you can tolerate some discomfort, you could probably get away with an epinephrine-free injection. But I recall that extraction of wisdom teeth is a pretty intense affair so maybe the dentist will need to use some other analgesic.
I find that this area (MAOI and anaesthesia) is definitely the most difficult and complicated area of the MAOI restrictions. As a general rule, I'd put up with some pain to avoid having to stop and then re-start the meds.

I had an experience with this almost two years back, during my Nardil trial. I was on 120mg/day (which my dentist was aware of). The day it was supposed to take place, I woke up at 4:00AM to rush down to the hospital and get the IV in, etc. The anaesthesiologist stopped by to let me know that they'd be putting me out soon and (lucky for me!!) I thought to ask him, "My dentist *did* mention I take an MAO-inhibitor, didn't he?" And of course he hadn't. Boy, was I pissed... All four teeth were hurting SO badly and I thought I'd finally get some relief, but then they decide to reschedule. Incompetent cretins. :-\

Anyway, I finally have it done two weeks later at another dentist's office. The whole process took less than 30 seconds -- his assistant just gave me about eight shots of Novacaine, then *yank* *yank* *yank* *yank*. All four were out and my mouth was stuffed full with gauze. Not unpleasant at all, really. Even better, he asked after we were through what *I* wanted for the pain! lol I figured I shouldn't push it *too* far, so I went with Darvon and Dilaudid. :-) I would've chosen Vicoprofen (or better yet, Norco), but I'm allergic to OTC painkillers.

Just make sure those hypodermics full of meperidine and epinephrine are *far* away from you during the whole procedure and you'll be fine! lol

I'm starting to think that what my dentist used for my crowns DID contain epinephrine. He told me that I would experience a racing heart for about 5 minutes after the injection. I appreciated him telling me that as I would have thought I was having a panic attack for the first time. But that sounds like epinephrine, doesn't it? He told me he looked it up and it was fine. And I was fine, no SE's.

Hmmmm.

I don't have much knowledge of pain killers besides Novacaine. I know in my Nardil packet it says do not take epedrha or whatever it is.

I will make sure the doctor knows fully well about MAOi's. I don't really want to be put out but if the teeth is under the skin I wonder if it will hurt more

I was on Parnate and like someone metioned couldn't have epinephrine in anesthesia. When I had a colonoscopy they gave me morphine which killed all the pain - and I had a paradoxical reaction in that I was wide alert during the entire proceedure. worked out fine.
