HELP! antibiotics and depression?

Posted by SickyVicky on March 2, 2004, at 17:16:20

I finally got on Lexapro a couple of months ago, am up to 20 mg and was feeling good UNTIL...strep throat! I have had problems with Penicillin products (had an Army doctor say I was nuts, he said he never heard of depression being a side effect of Penicillin) but I started Zithromax yesterday and today I almost feel like I need to pop a Xanax or something. What the heck?!? Anyone else have this problem? Thank goodness I take it for 5 days, I usually can't finish antibiotic treatment for this very reason. Thanks for any info and any advice, I just want to be "normal"! (Whatever that is...LOL!)

I don't think I have ever had an antibiotic worsen my depression. However, I did have an antibiotic, Biaxin XR, make me go hypomanic. My doc did not believe me, but if you read the insert carefully, it does have that as a potential side effect.

I have found that a virus/fever provokes depression and anxiety with me. I am pretty sensitive to medications, but I have not had a problem with Zithromax...but everybody is different.

Yes, I have absolutely had the same experience with antibiotics. Strange as it seems, I have had the experience of worsening mood with anxiety on amoxil and doxycycline and zithromax. I'm not exactly sure why this happens but I am always reluctant when I find myself needing an antibiotic.

I didn't have a worsening of depression from an antibiotic but I did get manic from taking eythromycin. It is a very rare side effect. Check the monograph and see if depression is listed. The monographs have to list every possible symptom known. You might have to go online to find the monograph because they aren't usually for the consumer.

Hope this helps,
Hundredhugs

I am in the middle of Doxycycline for 3 weeks. I have been feeling like poop. Most anything in the Army doesn't have a clue, just in case there was a question. Nothing like have strong beliefs (re; Army docs, cannot imagine and Army p-doc, scary), but a few years in the military will do that.

I am taking my Doxycycline for a little tick that got me weeks ago. I am thinking about stopping this stuff in a few days. No stomach upset and also taking Acidcophilus to offset some of the good guys getting killed.

My ailment is PD and depression for 9 years, under control.
20mg Imipramine, once a day at night.
7.5mg Tranxene 2 times a day.

Imipramine for the past 4 months, SSRI's were making me tired and lazy, kind of like depression.

Good luck!
