Buspar alone work for GAD for anyone?

Posted by chess on February 17, 2004, at 13:59:41

Has anyone had success with taking just Buspar alone for their general anxiety disorder?

How long did it take before Buspar alone lowered the anxiety?

Buspar is usually worthless.

Didn't work for me at all. Made me feel lightheaded. None of the SSRI's including Serzone have helped me much.

It depends on your chemistry. In my opinion, i think it works better combined with an SSRI. It is not a worthless drug. It just takes a while to start working, so dont listen to all the negativity about this drug. It works for alot of people.

I can't imagine Buspar working on its own. that;s because I have seen absolutely NO anecdotal evidence that it can work on its own, in real-life conditions. In this it is not much unlike the non-reuptake-inhibiting "antidepressants," Remereon, serzone, trazodone, that rarely if ever work without a reuptake inhibitor to augment.

In my experience, Buspar doesn't help that much with GAD, but people's response to it seems to vary greatly. By itself, the first time I tried it, it made me uncomfortably aggressive (my driving got really bad ;-), but then I was also withdrawing from benzos. The manufacturer of Buspar recommends NOT overlapping those two, precisely BECAUSE the Buspar doesn't have the GABA-mediated GAD relief/muscle relaxant effect that people are used to from benzodiazepines, so they naturally assume it isn't working.

Having said that, I got really GOOD results for several years with Serzone plus Buspar - Serzone coped with my endogenous depression, had a slight anxiolytic effect and really improved my sleep; Buspar stopped my stress/rage/depression vicious cycle as well as boosting the antidepressant effect. I've used it successfully at 20-30mg/day with _very_ low doses of Serzone (100-200 mg/day). My guess is it would help with the stress/rage response by itself for _some_ people. YMMV, as usual.

Tony, I think your assessment has been validated many times in the literature. Buspar may be useful for augmentation, as monotherapy, it is a failure. One reason may be the fact that very anxious people are not patient people. [if at all] which is a real negative for individuals with high anxiety.

I am happy you are doing well. Micro
P.S. Some pcp's tell their patients that Buspar helps with Benzo withdrawl. Is anyone else hearing this?

Can anyone explain how Buspar works?

I saw this on Scott's site:

Buspar

CYP-3A4 *  azapirone:
5-HT1a full agonist (pre)
5-HT1a partial agonist (post)
DA2 partial agonist
* 1-PP metabolite:
NE-alpha2 antagonist

The drug's geneic name is Buspirone Hydrochloride. Does it have something to do with chloride and the sodium - potassium pump? Does anyone know what 1-PP metabolite means?

I understand (I think) that an NE-alpha2 antagonist actually increases norepinephrine because the NE-alpha2 site is an inhibitor.

Is the 5-HT1a serotonin agonist working in the same vein as ssri's, or is that a subsite that does something else?

Thanks to anyone who can help.
