Well, there goes Lamictal...

Posted by socialdeviantjeff on February 2, 2004, at 23:29:10

Talked to my Pdoc today. I was on week 3 of Lamital. I was on 50 mg. Had to stop because of: headache, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, sharp muscle pain: left hand and elsewhere, self injurious behavior, difficulty hearing and discerning words, general muscle pain, uncoordination, ligtheadedness, fatigue, sleep disturbances, GI upset.

Sucks.

Jeff,
You are sooo right! That does suck! I am sorry you had so many SE's with this medication. I know you were very hopeful that it would help. Stay focused, bro. There are many more meds to sample and we will be right there with you. :)

I am sorry that Lamictal did not work for you. I know those side effects are very real. I've been on Lamictal for two months and am still trying to make it work.

I have though been experiencing general muscle pain, sharp pains in my left and right hands and feeling like a bug has bitten me but when I look, of course nothing there. Also some agitation and anxiety. Hang in there. You will find the right med I hope. Let us know how you are doing.

Thanks, I'll let you know what happens (nm)

Lamictal, why give up entirely?

Why give up entirely? Back way off on the dose and go more slowly. We all have such different reactions to these meds. Maybe its not for you but, it has been so good for so many. Are you tapering off something else? That can account for many symptoms you described. Are you on other meds? I'd start again at 12.5 and increase by the month see if you tolerate it better. Three weeks up to 50mgs is not a very slow build up. Hang in there. I've heard of headaches and activation as start up side effects but all that stuff you descibe could be due to going too quickly. It could also be that you and Lamictal are a bad match but don't junk it completely just yet.

Hey there. I'm sorry you are having such a tough time. I don't know if this will make you feel any better but I had some start-up symptoms that resolved themselves:

headaches: went away in a couple of weeks.
Fluish: Cleared up in a few weeks.
Shoulder and muscle pain and tightness: gone after a few massages and a few weeks.
Sleep: helped by seroquel.

I haven't had the others, but the above poster may be right that your titration sounds a little quick. You might have less trouble at 12.5/week. I went at about 7/week for a while. It just may not be the right drug for you, but it may be worth discussing the possibility of a retrial with your pdoc. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I'll talk to my pdoc about it. Tried the same strategy with Tegretol when it began and I couldn't even handle 50 mg/day after three months.

If I could re-intro the lamictal, that would be good. I just had a severe anxiety attack today and would like something that works. grrrr..

klonopin might help with the rough spots.

Jeff,

I totally know how you feel. I have been through wellbutrin, strattera and now I am supposed to try lamictal, which I totally don't want too. I have depression and really bad anxiety. I hate those flu like symptoms..

Tell me about it. I've been off of it for a week and still feel like crap. But honestly, I'd give the Lam a fair chance. It's a good med for a lot of people. Just remember to tirate up very slowly.

Good luck...
