ssri + kava? is it safe? please help!

Posted by matthhhh on February 6, 2004, at 14:45:28

I was just wondering if anyone knows if these 2 combos are safe- i have had an absolutely euphoric, tranquil feeling with just small doses of each of them, im just wondering if it is safe or could lead to serotonin syndrome? As far as i know though kava generally works by enhancing gaba and ssris increase serotonin so i dont see any reason for this to happen. Thanks!

I combined lexapro with Kava Kava, up to 740mg kavalactones/day with no ill effects (except my psychiatrist being convinced I was on methadone or heroin toward the upper end of the dosing range!). I do not recommend doing that for long periods of time due to hepatotoxicity and "kava dermopathy".

NOTE: In addition to the GABAnergic effects you mention, Kava has a lot of overlap with mood stabilizers, in that it is a Na+ blocker and a Ca+ blocker. It's also a 5ht1a agonist and modulates glutaminergic neurotransmission.

I think I'm going to start redirecting discussion regarding alternative treatments, even in combination with conventional treatments, to Psycho-Babble Alternative. Here's a link:
