SEVERE NERVOUSNESS - benzo's don't help

Posted by Lainy on February 4, 2004, at 19:46:55

I have such severe nervousness that I've had to be hospitalized for it. It controls my life. I have tried every benzo out there...Klonopin, Valium, Xanax, Ativan...etc. SSRI's are also ineffective, and I believe I've been on nearly every one. HELP! Can you relate, if so, what helped you that isn't a benzo or SSRI?

I need my life back and I have to go back to work soon . . .I've already been out of work for nearly 6months because of this condition.

Have you tried a TCA's or MAOI's yet? Have you given the SSRI's fair trials? Sometimes it can take up to 4 to 6 weeks. How about Buspar? There are lots of different meds you can try. Dont give up!

Hi:
Your 'severe' nervousness is because of 'Anxiety' or coming from 'Depression?' Without proper dx., it might be very hard to get appropriate med. that might be in your case.
If this is due to 'Anxiety,' then you and your pdoc. needs to search for more effective med. for Anxiety. But, as seeing your past med.-record/chart, it sounds to me like you're more likely 'Anxiety' category. For this, you need more aggressive treatment such as AP med., like Seroquel might be one of choice. However, this med. has strong efficacy, then your pdoc. may have different view. Just my suggestion, since you seem looking for some information on your problem.

I agree with the happygirl.. try an antipsychotic if you haven't already.

geodon and abilify are two relatively new AP's that can help with depression as well..

A side affect of a benzo is "nervousness" thats why they dont help you, Have you tryed nardil, so so so may good experiences on it, I too have nervousness and its runing my life too, and i am sure 1000's of others suffer with it to, Can you get to the bottom of this? can you find out why you are so nervous? Talk to a phsyciatrist and ask to try an maoi nardil maybe if all ssri's have failed..

Good luck

Gabitril (tiagabine) with or without Klonopin (or Valium if that doesn't work) should do the trick. Also, as someone else mentioned, an atypical antipsychotic might work.

I've never found nervousness to me a side effect of benzos. SSRI's and any drug that effects norepinephrine, yes. But not benzos. Klonopin works well for me almost all the time. When it isn't enough I use a bit of Risperdal as needed. (less than 15 pills in almost a year)

Hi Lainy. I know I should read other people's responses before answering so forgive me if I am repeating someone else. But have you had your thyroid tested? It sounds like you could be HYPERthyroid. It would just take a blood test to find out.

Yes, I have had my thyroid tested and it is fine. I have had other blood work done as well, for example I had my hormonal level tested. But, I thank you for the advice...it's great advice to give someone.

Lainy,

Has your doc considered adrenal medulla problems (Pheochromocytomas):

The classical symptoms of pheochromocytomas are those attributable to excess adrenaline production. Often these patients will have recurring episodes of sweating, headache, and a feeling of high anxiety. The following symptoms are listed from the most common to the least common:

Headaches (severe)
Excess sweating (generalized)
Racing heart (tachycardia and palpitations)
Anxiety / nervousness (feelings of impending death)
Nervous shaking (tremors)
Pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen
Nausea (with or without nausea)
Weight loss
Heat intolerance
