Question about Effexor XR

Posted by Juco on February 2, 2004, at 22:16:02

I have been suffering symptoms of anxiety over the last year or so. I do not feel depressed at all. My main problem is anxiety. I have numbing of both arms and what feels like I constant rash that seems to get worse when I feel more anxious. Most importantly I feel dizzy and "out of it" on an everyday basis. My doctor prescribed Zoloft, but I did not react so great to it (made my heart race) so he changed it to the current Effexor XR.
What my concern is, and I was hoping for others to share their opinions about, is I don't feel like I am depressed at all, does anybody recommend this medication for anxiety only? Pretty much the symptoms that I listed above?
Thank you for sharing

I'd try a 2nd SSRI before going to Efexor. Prozac would be worth a try as it's the easiest to giveup.

Cheers,
Panda.

If your not depressed, why not just take a benzo when you need it. I have anxiety attacks and am on effexor xr and xanax - and my anxiety is under control.

ask your pdoc.
good luck

I think your doctor did the right thing. Effexor (and other antidepressants) are given to non-depressed people who have anxiety. Effexor is a very safe and very effective drug.

I would recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and possibly adding a benzo to help get you through the process. Good luck!

NO NO NO! EFFEXOR IS NOT SAFE!! i am withdrawing from this drug now, and it has been horrible. don't take effexor unless you absolutely have to, and make sure that your doctor has gone through taking someone else off the drug, or they may not be able to give you the support you will likely need when (if) you decide to discontinue.

please research this drug very well before you take it! i recommend www.vivisimo.com search engine - try "venlafaxine withdrawal"

I have to agree w/ justjustin.

I am w/drawling from Effexor now and it is HORRIBLE. I took it for two years for anxiety, 150's once per day. I'm on day 7 of 75's once per day and I swear I'm not sure if I'm going to make it.

It feels as though I've been poisoned, my organs hurt, my body hurts, I am crapping out my stomach lining, and I am so dizzy I can't drive my car.

I've been told it can take months to fully get this crap outta your system. Be warned, try something else and do you research b/4 you sign on for it.

Good luck : )

I have taken Effexor and Zoloft both, and Effexor has far less side effects that Zoloft. Effexor works on two things versus Zoloft that works on Seretonin. Effexor does make you drowsy so that might help the Anxiety

Justjustine, I wonder if you drink alchohol, or smoke cigarettes as well, maybe your alchohol consumption is leading to your discomfort.
