Hey,

I had a lot of trouble on Paxil. I never really did notice any improvement, although my therapist told me I had improved. I was hot all the time, gained weight, profoundly sleepy, and after I'd been on it about 9 months, I *really* wanted to kill myself. Serious, serious suicidal ideations, unlike any I'd ever had before. I got off Paxil and felt amazing for 2 weeks, and then crashed. Wellbutrin helped me a lot more. Not perfect, but better.

I think you need to talk to your doctor about what you are feeling. Meds are different for everyone and it may take you longer to get any benefit from Paxil. I dunno. But your doctor could help you through it better. Therapy, etc. while *waiting* for the drug to kick in was a must for me.

Hang in there, good luck, :-)

Susan

Fat and Happy -The Joys of Paxil

Paxil is an amazing mediacation for Social Phobia and Anxiety problems. I was on it for three years and it was the happiest I have ever been in my life. If you are someone who normally freaks out before going to a social functions or even casual get together at someones house, it works wonders. You do not get the intense sweating, flushing of the cheeks, hives and trembling. You can function, leave the house, not cancel on friends, not flake out on social gatherings, it is great. But you do get really fat. You turn into a little fatty before you even know it. You are fat and happy. It seems to be resistant to diet and exercise as well. The sad thing is, is that you do not care... Your vanity and severe insecurity completely goes away. Too much so, before you know it you are fat and puffy. I call it the Paxil Puff Up. Does anyone know a good Social Phobia drug that does not make you gain weight? Please no SSRI's even Lexapro made me into a little fat girl w/ dizziness.

Effexor does not usually cause weight gain.

The sad thing is that when you start to feel great and socialize with Paxil you can hardly follow through with any sexual encounters because it kills libido worse than any SSRI I've taken. I could have sex on Prozac, Celexa but on Paxil I couldn't AT ALL! I thought a tolerance would develop and I would be able to adjust but my pdoc told me the longer you take it the worse it gets. I hated to stop because it worked so good but sex overruled and had to go another route.

hi Sue,

I don't know if this is even relevant for you, but I've been on Paxil for about 1.5 years now with very mixed results. A friend of mine is also taking Paxil and he told me last week that alcohol completely banished the effects of the medication. Being a somewhat steady drinker (3 - 5 days/week) I took his advice and about 10 days ago I stopped drinking. For a while it was terrible, I'm not sure if I was having alcohol withdrawal or what, but after about 10 or 12 days now, I feel noticably better. If you are drinking at all, I would definitely recommend you quit immediately. My doctor (not to mention my med. info inserts) always told me alcohol and paxil do not mix, but I went ahead on my not-so-merry way anyhow and continued drinking regularly. Not sure if that was the determining factor in the paxil ineffectiveness but I think it certainly had a negative effect.

I hope you start feeling better soon, I know how terrible it feels to be in your position. Keep your head up! :)

Totally! I forgot what an orgasm was on Paxil and just accepted the fact that is was not going to happen for me. That's sad now that I think about it. What are you taking now?
