Does anyone have a thyroid problem on Lex?

Posted by nottoosoupy on January 31, 2004, at 22:33:10

I have been hypothyroid for a while now (4 years)and recently started on Lex (a month ago). I seem to be more tired, kind of like I used to be before I knew I was hypothyroid. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with being sleepy on Lex or if anyone has a thyroid problem and experienced any changes while on Lex? I really appreciate any help you can give me!!

Hi Soupy,

I don't have a thyroid problem, but lex has definiately made me VERY sleepy. For me it went away around week 6. Now that I'm increasing my dose from 10 mg to 20 mg I've been more tired than usual. I think it will go away in another six weeks. I hope it does, because as you know being sleepy all the time is awful!

I've heard that Wellbutrin can have an energizing effect that helps counter the tired feelings you get on lex. Maybe ask your pdoc about it. I hope you begin to feel better soon!

K.

Hi there. I don't think Lexapro would affect your Thyroid within one month ... but anything is possible. If you are really concerned I would ask to get a blood test done.

Maxime - who is battling hypothyroidism right now and not liking it!

Do NOT take your thyroid med and Lex together. The Lex inhibits the thyroid medication (at least it does with Synthroid). I had to start taking my thyroid med at night (and don't eat for 2 hrs beforehand) and the Lex in the morning.

Hi! I have had a hypothyroid problem for about 3 years and take 50 mg syntroid for it. I have been on lexapro 15 mg since last June. It's fine.

I too felt VERY tired on the lexapro for at least a month, probably a bit longer. But it went away and now I feel great. It was definately the lexapro and not my thyroid acting up, since I have had my thyroid tested since then and it is fine.

I had not heard of the interaction between lexapro and thyroid meds, but I have always taken mine at opposite times of the day anyway.

Good luck!
