Metabolic Acidosis- - Topamax

Posted by Nissy on January 19, 2004, at 20:16:21

Hi there,
I seen my Doctor today (1-19-04) and he said there is a new finding with Topamax. It can cause Metabolic Acidosis. So I have to go in and get a blood draw for a metabolic panel and an electrolyte imbalance. Anyone else??
Thanks,
Nissy

I just had my blood drawn today and am freaking out!!!!! HARD CORE!!! Now, he claims that the statics are about 1:1000 and it hasn't happened that the chloride (is it chloride he said?) levels have changed in ANY of the patients he has treated with Topamax, so he told me not to worry at all. Just to be aware. Also, he said that the FDA claims that people with certain kidney disease and age factors (over 60, ect) are at a higher risk. But, HELLO!!! I'm still worried! I'm waiting for the results and if I have to get off Topamax I jsut don't know what I'm going to do....This drug has seriously changed my life...I blew a kiss at the vial of blood before they carried it off :( I'm pathetic....

I tried Zonegran for a little over a week. It definitely suppressed my appetite during that time. Obviously, I can't comment on its long-term effects. I had to stop it due to a possible allergic reaction.

Thanks. My P Doc has mentioned Zonegran. But you know how it is once you find something that works for you.

Sorry to hear about all this. I've had metabolic acidosis, and it's not much fun. Of course, I can't separate the effects of acidosis from everything else that was wrong with me, but still... and getting blood gases drawn is really unpleasant. I'm so glad to hear that your tests came back fine Karen!
