Lexapro and Alcohol Cause Death-

Posted by jooneybuggy on January 9, 2004, at 18:46:22

FINALLY

Here is the information on Lexapro,It has taken us over a year to get it. The results of the blood test on the Lexapro, was 10 times higher than it should have been for the dose she was on. It was 210 and should have been 21. All medication was accounted for.
No suspect of sucide or etc.
She was drinking as well.
The liver could not metabolize both, is the only explination they could, or would give us.
She was on the drug less than 2 Weeks--she was taking it for panic attacks--we had been robbed in our shop, she was helt at gun point and tied up. She could not get over it, and the panic attacks were very bad. We finally got her to see a doctor at a clinic--the doctor saw her 1--ONE time and prescribed this drug--
I feel there are not enough warnings given with it,on inserts, or from the prescribing doctor.
To all of you out there who are on this drug or may be on it--DO NOT DRINK-
of course, THIS FACT should be known with all of these type drugs,
but not all follow directions. Thats life.
Less than 2 weeks on a drug, and the levels are that high!!!!!--
yes, alcohol was a contribituing factor.
BOTH TOGEHTER WERE LETHAL.
BE CAREFUL, DO NOT LOOSE A LOVE ONE AS WE DID, TAKE CARE TO READ AND ASK QUESTIONS. Bottem line is this drug is not safe.
take care all.

I'm sorry for your loss, I can't imagine it. I am an alcoholic who hasn't drank in 6 years but I can't belive how many people drink on this stuff. One guy in my group was potentially an alcoholic and was on an ssri. I think most say not to drink with it on bottle but I don't know if docs always consider this carefully and make sure the people aren't drinking on it.

Also if the Doctor didn't tell her he should lose his license, that's my own opinion.

Well, I have drunk on Paxil many times and have never noticed any adverse effects but I will tell you this, Drinking on Wellbutrin is a very bad idea. I was taking wellbutrin and thought that it couldn’t be any worse than drinking on paxil. Man was I wrong. I was seeing not double but triple on this stuff and I hadn't drank that much with it either. I think that it really depends on the medication you are on. But its all very risky finding out. Sorry for the lose of your friend.

It's funny you say that about WB because I have heard the warnings too about seizure risk. But yesterday I added WB to my Celexa. I went out for a few drinks last night and I couldn't get a buzz to save my life. I'm dead serious, I had ten drinks before the night was over and two of them were martinis. I'm not the man I was in college, so this was probably more than I've had to drink in many years. I don't feel too terrible this morning either.

This may sound cavalier in light of the above poster losing his friend and I am now very concerned about my liver in retrospect. I just thought it was very interesting

I was on Wellbutrin for well over a year, most of the time drinking was fine, but one day I had a couple margaritas and almost died. Seriously. Thank god there was an EMT with me who basically pumped my stomach and I still have never felt that way, it was horrible. Before that I had also noticed that I could drink without problem. you just can't tell. Don't risk it. Personally, I see no point to trying it again.

When you say 210 and 21 what are you referring to there?

Sorry about your loss. I don't believe that everyone is affected by combining alcohol with these meds the same way. Some extra strain is put on the liver, but different people are affected differently. All i have noticed is that it take longer for alcohol to be eliminated out of my system when on these meds. Anyone drinking on a new med should start out easy to see how you handle it. Good luck

Sorry if I was not clear on the numberes, they refer to the level of Lexapro in her system, from the test they took. It should have be 21 but it was 210---acording to the dose she took once a day. That is 10 times higher than it should have been. Her liver could not metabolize both is one of the explanitions, and surely was true. I am begining to hear on TV and from others more warnings about this--with other drugs as well. But she was not warned. Of course she should have known, but she was not in a normal state of mind with the panic attacks--that was the problem being treated. Such as waste of a fine beautiful girl, kind and loveing. I will forever in my mind put much--, much of the blame for Her death on this drug, The doctor and lack of information given to her.

I had quite an experience with it, it was so bad that I dont remember half the night. The alcohol hit me so hard that I couldnt even stand on my own. I cant believe that something serious didnt happen to me as a result. I agree with you that people need to be warned of the interaction with alcohol, although it seems every one has different reactions. I am having a hard time not drinking though since it is such a social thing. I dont drink too much, especially after that last episode, but not drinking at all seems almost impossible, unless of course I plan on spending the rest of my life in my house alone.

Thanks to all who have written, and as I stated, I don't think they -the doctors, the drug company are being forceful enough in their warnings. They should mention DEATH and it does happen. My daugher drank without Lexapro, and never had any problem --although at the time of the robbery and right afterwards she was drinking more than she should have, and these things are what concilers and doctors should KNOW--about their clients, some people WON"T even admit to drinking to their doctors, but my daughter did, and was not warned strongly enough.
To all who read this--drinking with any type of drug is dangerous, Please be careful, I've read a lot of the posts here to me, and most of them tell me they drink with many drugs, and how they felt. I feel they are darn lucky that something bad didn't happen, as happened to my daughter.

take care.

I am an alcoholic and my doctor put me on Lexapro and Risperdal. I drank every other day on Lexapro. The worst thing I have noticed is that I feel like dying the next day really bad. Lexapro also increased my cravings for alcohol.

How old are you? Did your doctor warn you about drinking? It is a deadly combination to mix these drugs with drinking. Some people can do it for years, and in my daughters case, it was less than 2 weeks on Lexapro---
