Need input from Zoloft consumers

Posted by theo on January 12, 2004, at 18:28:47

I'm currently on Paxil which is working quite well for my social anxiety but I cannot handle the ability to not get excited at all about sex. Started out as delayed ejaculation and has now turned into a complete lack of desire period. Although most SSRI's have this effect, my doc said the sex problems with Zoloft aren't near as bad. I'm male by the way. Any input would be appreciated.

I've been on Zoloft for three months now, haven't noticed any sexual side effects. But it's only been three months!

When I was on Zoloft, I wasn't that interested in sex. I felt kinda numb alot. When I started to get off it, I began to get more interested... So, I did notice that I had changed in that area. I don't know if there's really any difference between Paxil and Zoloft in the area of sexual interest. Some say that Paxil is a stronger drug (more side effects and harder to get off of) than Zoloft. So, who knows, it may help to switch. Just take care in switching meds and really do research ahead of time. I wish I had done more research.

Do you take it in the morning or at bedtime?

I've never taken Paxil, so I can only compare Zoloft to how I feel while on MAO Parnate or no AD at all. Whereas my libido (sexual desire) and performance are equally good whether I'm taking Parnate or nothing, I experienced a very disconcerting difficulty in attaining orgasm while taking Zoloft. In fact, that was one of the side-effects that made me quit that drug.

hey theo,
i've never had any sexual problems--lack of desire, anorgasmia--with zoloft (i'm a 21-year old female). i am on 100mg right now, have been as high as 150 but instead added lamictal to augment it.
how much paxil do you take? i figure many of these s/e problems are dose-related, so if you need a higher dose of paxil, you will probably need more zoloft and may be more prone to problems. zoloft in general, i think, is also more activating than paxil, so if you are taking that for anxiety too, be careful switching. celexa was great for my anxiety and depression, i didn't have sexual problems on that either, but zoloft made me agitated for awhile.
maybe i'm just lucky with the sex stuff though. =) we're all different.
good luck,
liz

Hi, I'm female, but I just wanted to say, paxil did cause bad sexual side effects for me, but do did zoloft and effexor. (just no interst)- celexa was the only one that didnt have that, but it pooped out on me and I had to try other drugs.

I'm only taking 20mg Paxil so when I start Zoloft I will probably just take 50mg. How long did the agitation last? Was it dose related?

Was Zoloft AS bad as Paxil? I cannot even have sex on Paxil period.

Hi~
I can't tell you much about Paxil b/c I have never been on it. However my best friend is on it and for a while she had no sex drive or desire, after a few months she got it all back.
As for Zoloft, I was on it for about 3 weeks. It made me feel like a drooling zombie. I HATED it. I was too miserable to even think about sex.
Now I am on day 22 of Lexapro. I am excited about sex though it take me a little longer to get reach orgasm.
Hope this helps!
Lexy

welllllllll...
for me the agitation lessened when i stopped titrating up the dose, but it never went away completely. it was enough to be uncomfortable, which is why i lowered it and added lamictal instead. so it was a bit dose-related. but you know, that lamictal makes me a little anxious too. durn. i take just a little klonopin for it, hoping that when i get to a stable point on it my body will sigh with relief that i have stopped messing with its chemical levels and i can chill out.
don't let me scare you from it though, i think i am just mad anxiety-prone. my long-term goal is to find a non-ssri (or a low, augmented dose) as i think every time i re-start them (back in the good old days when i thought i was fine without), they are a bit less effective.
hang in,
liz
