Lexapro and agitation or restlessness

Posted by steve3211 on January 11, 2004, at 19:34:48

Hi Guys,
Anyone experience restlessness or agitation on Lexapro? I am on my 3rd week at 5mg and I'lll have occasional bouts of what I think is agitation. I get very irratable, cannot sit still and feel hungry and don't want to eat. It is a rotten side effect, but only seems to last an hour or two. Today for most of the day felt almost as normal for a change and then got restless and agitated. Frustrating! Anyone else felt this side effect? It is making me worried about bumping up to 7.5 mg's. I am also taking 30mg restoril nightly for sleep which I intend to taper off.
Thanks everyone-Steve

Hi Steve,

I had general feelings of anxiety or what could also be called restlessness or agitation both before I started taking Lex and for sometime shortly after taking the drug. I remember thinking that it seemed the general anxiety was getting worse rather than better. But now after I've been on Lex for about 6 weeks (5 mg for the first four, 10 mg for the last two) I definitely feel less of that anxiety/agitation feeling than when I was first taking Lex and less anxiety than before I started taking it as well.

I would say you should just be patient and give it more time. The SSRIs are funny that way - they seem to take 4-8 weeks or more before they have their full effect.

I don't know anything about the drug you're taking for sleeping.

Best of luck to you.

Bill

Hi Steve,

I'm on day 23 of 10 mg of Lex. I've definately had a few moments where I feel like maybe I've had too much coffee...I get jittery and can't sit still. But it hasn't happened often. It's also worth mentioning that I don't have much of an appetite.

I've read other posts where people mention something similar to what you're experiencing. Hopefully they'll respond to your post...or you can find the old posts on this site. Best of luck to you. Let us know if you do start taking a higher dose and how you feel.

K.

P.S. There might be an additional med you can take to help combat the jittery feelings you're having. You might consider talking to your doc about it.

Steve-
Yes definitely, I and many others have experienced this...it subsides but it happens gradually, not all at once..Im in the middle of week 7 now and starting to feel that it is subsiding to the point where its no longer a constant mosquito in my ear..
