Lexapro side effects - Average time frame?

Posted by Benny on January 4, 2004, at 21:26:37

Having quite a few problems adjusting to Lexapro 10 mg as I have developed a huge range of side effects. Wanted to get some idea of how long it takes before side effects ease or dissapear. I am only on day 12 still; but it has been getting quite rough the last few days and I was hoping I could get some idea of what I was in for given others' experiences.

Most of the side effects that cause serious discomfort go away after 2-3 weeks..by this I mean nausea, insomnia, high levels of agitation and restlessness, increased sweating...you being in day 12 you are probably at the height of your S/E's so hang in there a week from now you will probably feel much better..after the S/E's go away there is about a 2-3 week lull period where youre not feeling side effects anymore and the med hasnt fully kicked in yet so you may think "this isnt working"...but after about 8-9 weeks you should be able to see a noticeable improvement in the way you feel...what S/E's are you having?

Appreciate the response. I have had quite a few of the side effects listed in the 'brochure'; some more irritating than others. Nausea and vomiting, vivid nightmares, lethargy/fatigue, fever followed by chills, nervousness/panic, headache in frontal lobe region, inability to concentrate or focus, diahorrea, heat or cold intollerance, constant yawning and jaw shaking, extremely thirsty coupled with consant urination.
I sound like such a whiner, but dat's da score right now. If these side effects can ease or dissapear and a beneficial response emergesometime soon, then I will be glad to stick it out. I suspect 3-4 weeks may be more realistic for me in this regard but it is reassuring to know someone else found it rather tricky for a few weeks before S/E tolerance developed.

Might you consider cutting back to 5mg? That might make the initial se's more tolerable. I started @5mg and I had just about all the se's. I was so sick I couldn't get out of bed the whole second week and had to call in sick to work. The se's tapered off and pretty much gone 4th week. Then I got much worse depression and anxiety, doc upped dose to 10mg. Wasn't until 9th week befor I felt *better*.

It took a while BUT IT IS WORTH IT. Hang in there!~~~8|8

I'm on day 17 of 10 mg Lex and I'm about where you're at. I can't sleep, feeling anxious, my thinking is muddled, night sweats and I feel like I might be loosing my mind. The first week and a half I felt like I had the flu - runny nose, sore throat, ear congestion etc... I'm giving myself 4 weeks to adjust. Reading others posts has helped me cope and is VERY encouraging. You're not alone in trying to get used to Lex. Many, many people have done it with positive results. Hang in there!

What happens at week 4? For me it was worse depression and anxiety like never before. Then doc upped my dose and things got better, but didn't really *feel* better until week 9.

Hang in there, the wait was worth it for me.~~~8|8

Mariposa,

Just curious, what dose were you at before your doc increased it? After reading your last post I'm worried about heading in to week 4...I'm taking Lex for anxiety and don't know if I can handle more.
