The simplest explanation I can give is bipolar means you can be manic or depressed. Bipolar II is not as severe - you can be hypomanic and depressed.

Hi:
Label does not matter once med. combo. working on you VERY WELL. One of my friends is Bipolar I that is delusional, psychosis, depression along with other annoying problems due to his condition. However, with a right med. combo. along with fairly nice-counselling, he's so successful enough to have a family with a job in the Medical field. On the otherhand, if there is hard to get a right med. combo. due to either the inability to find a right pdoc. or your system does not adapt to foregin/med. regimen, there is quite a chaos. The most important factor is whether the med. is RIGHT for you, because there is no scientific measures to rx the right med. combo. 'Trials and Errors' are very common among Bps. Thus, it needs a right pdoc. who is capable to listen to your symptoms and psychological issues(if possible, ...).
Just, in my personal journey on Bp, it takes quite a time to find the right med. combo. since my dx. is complexity with 'Bp II with rapid cycler.'
There are many different form of Bp, ... some saying even 20 different form of Bp, from roughly three different form of Bp,... Bp I, Bp II and cyclothemia(sp?). Then, when your symptoms is so severe and complex, you need a competent and experienced pdoc. who works on for this purpose ... 'hard to treat' cases. Just regular/unexperienced pdocs. are mostly good for depression form of M.I. without any complexity that needs just one Anti-depressant.
H.G.
