ANGORAPHOBIA

Posted by AntiTrust on January 1, 2004, at 17:32:57

Hello, I am AntiTrust and was dx with depression and GAD 3 years ago, just two months ago however I started going to a pdoc and have a new dx of angoraphobia w/ panic w/ underlying depression.

I have been on a handful of different antidepressants. Effexor xr was the worst, I almost committed suicide on that crap!
I just started Lexapro 10mg, just started meaning, my 3rd day on the new med and things seems sorta kinda better...I also take kolonopin 1mg but the pdoc will NOT rx it! I need to go to a reg doc for that script, can you believe that? the pdoc dx me w/ angoraphobia and knows in detail of my panic/anxiety and says no to Klonopin.
Well anywho.......anyone else out there w/ this crap? I know I have had something wrong w/ me all my life but just thought it 'normal' seeing in our family it runs rampit..everyone called it 'extreme shyness' depression and all that comes w/ it.... for some reason was a 'tabboo' subject.
My first marriage ended because my spouse had nor wanted to understand. I am now remarried and happier than ever...just dealing w/ my mental health problems and my ex....WANNA SCREAM!

Hi and welcome to PsychoBabble! I'm sorry that you've had so much trouble with your meds. I hope the Lexapro continues to have a positive result for you and that you are able to get the Klonopin that you need. You might want to do some reading in the various Lexapro threads above or do a search for any specific questions you may have about your experience with your condition. Three days isn't a lot of time to judge a medication, and you may need some more opinions/guidance soon, so keep posting! I hope that this med will be the right fit for you.

I can't take antidepressants at all as I have had terrible reactions to all of them. I have been dx'd Bipolar II (no mania) and currently take 100mg each Topamax and Seroquel with Xanax prn. It was a long road to get me to the right doctor/meds, but I'm so glad I didn't give up. Even though I still have a long way to go. my life (brain chemistry-wise) is much better now than it was six months ago. I am definitely a success story and my anxiety level has dissipated dramatically while I am sleeping better than I have in over a year.

I do identify with your feelings of Agoraphobia. I have also struggled all my life with panic and anxiety as part of my illness. It is something that runs in my family and, like your family, it was never really discussed. It was only this year that I learned that my paternal grandmother was locked up and given ECT in the 40's. I can't help but wonder how much different my life might have been if I had had that information when I was in my 20's. I believe that I would have been much more able to recognize subtle patterns and behaviors that would have brought me to seek treatment much sooner. Of course, the most important thing is not to worry about what our families could have done differently, but to take charge of our treatment and move forward from here. I wish you the best of luck.
