From what I've read, schizoaffective is thought to have a better prognosis than pure schizophrenia, and is not usually as disabling.

The difference is schizophrenia is primarily a thought disorder. Schizoaffective is also a mood disorder...think of it as schizophrenia with a twist of bipolar. With schizoaffective, there are clear episodes of mood variation in addition to the thought disorder.
