Please, give me an idea!

Posted by tensor on November 26, 2003, at 8:54:46

Hi,
my depression is getting deeper and deeper, have been on remeron but it pooped out. I'm currently on remeron + clomipramine + klonopin. No response from clomipramine. I have tried several SSRIs, TCA, effexor and buspar. I finally get to see a new pdoc in a couple of weeks. But i have no idea of what to try next. Please, anyone, who have failed responding to the most common meds. What are your advices? meds? I barely make it out of bed nowadays. I haven't been too school for two months.

Thank you so much in advance

Hi tensor, you could ask about MAOIs...they can be quite helpful in treatment resistant depression...other than that, it might be just more experimentation. I know this probably doesn't help you any...I'm sorry. Maybe this new doc will have some better insight once they investigate your treatment history. You sound like a friend of mine who just quit the pharmaceuticals altogether and is now having some success with SAM-e...not that I'm suggesting you do the same...I just know what it's like to get to a breaking point. I've been there many times myself as I also have been on the medication merry-go-round (and still am.)

Try to hang in there...

My story was much like yours - for over 10 years i tried every SSRI, some TCAs and different combos and they either didnt work or pooped out. I finally agreed to take an MAOI, which my pdoc had been recommending from day one. If you research the modern updates of the diet, you will find it is really no big deal. For the first time in my life i am truly depression free. It is not without side effects and its own set of problems, but to me the results are worth it. Good luck, Melodie

sorry, reloaded twice (nm)

Tensor:

I've been in the same situation you're going through. These meds often have a habit of losing their effectiveness after a period of time. Don't give up hope! Force yourself to get out of bed at a fixed time each day. Set small goals for yourself: paint your room, change the oil in your car, find a book you'd like and read it, meet some friends for coffee, whatever. Get some exercise every day--don't just lie in bed. Believe me. I know what you're going through--I've been there several times. The key for me was getting into a pattern of life: get up at 7 am, read the paper (unless it makes you more depressed), have breakfast, enjoy a cup of coffee, take a walk, help a neighbor, go to a place in your city where (safe) crowds congregate and talk to strangers, listen to their fears and worries. I know it's hard to care about anything when you feel the way you do, but I'm convinced staying in bed is the WORST thing you can do.

When you see your new pdoc, make sure he's willing to work with you--changing meds if necessary. Also, consider conbinations of meds--don't rule out drugs you've already tried. Of course, mixing meds may not be feasible if you're taking MAOIs.

If you're religious at all, pray. But don't give up and don't let yourself turn into a vegetable! A lot of us have been through what you're going through--you've just got to believe me, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck, I know you'll pull it together.

Regards and Good Mental Health,

Caleb

Hello. Your story sounds like mine. I finally hunted down a PDOC who would prescribe an MAOI. I'm on Parnate and it's the best med I have ever taken.

I take Parnate and augment with Topamax because i gained weight on it, which is atypical. Its a great combo for me though. I hope you find yours soon! Best wishes, Melodie

How about a bit of Provigil? It can help with energy and have a mood brightening affect.
