Lexapro vs. Fluoxetine

Posted by Jen L on November 25, 2003, at 19:40:12

I have been taking Fluoxetine (prozac)-20 mg daily- for about two years. I have had pretty good results as I suffer from very mild anxiety and mild depression. I recently heard about Lexapro and asked my doctor about it. She told me it is supposed to be "better" so I began taking it (10 mg daily) about 5 days ago. I did not completely stop taking Fluoxetine beforehand, but just began the Lexapro immediately.(Wed- fluoxetine; thurs-Lexapro) When will I notice any changes if any? Is it worth switching?
Has anyone out there made such a switch??

I like Lexapro more than Prozac because Lexapro is more calming for me. But if I were doing well on Prozac, I would not switch to a different drug. Maybe you should stay put.

My husband switched from Zoloft right to Lexapro without missing a day. No problem. I will say that he spent a few months acting different. Not bad so much as unpredicitable. He is doing so very well now - much better than on the Zoloft.

I think Lexapro is a good drug for some but it seems like I've heard more people dislike it than like it. I've taken both and had much better success with Prozac than Lexapro hands down. It's amazing how the "newest" AD's get a bunch of hype from doctors who have never taken these medications!

I've tried Prozac, Effexor, Zoloft, Paxil and after all of them I went back to the original first one I tried... Prozac. It's worked the best for me without being sedating.

My comparison

Prozac - lost sex drive, numbing out emotions, got angry easily, no withdrawal

Lexapro- nausea, yawning, and diarrhea when starting the drug, no sex drive & no orgasms, headaches, fatigue, calming, colors are much brighter, withdrawal symptoms if you haven't taken a pill for 3 days

Overall, I have had more s/e with lexapro. The drug is more calming and seems very effective with depression as well. The fatigue and sexual side effects are a big problem for me.

With prozac, I didn't sleep for 12 hrs straight. I didn't have the anorexia either. I didn't yawn all day and feel like throwing up. My sexual ability was affected after taking it for 2 years. I did gain 15 lbs on prozac.

I haven't been on lexapro to see if the weight thing will be a problem. I still have no appetite. I thought I would throw up all Thanksgiving day. I am so damn tired all the time with Lexapro too. I feel like my sexual ability is literally nonexistent. This drug is a chemical castration. I know that I am repeating myself, but these s/e are a serious problem.

My husband took Prozac sometime around 1987-to about 1998. Then he went a few years with nothing. Not a good situation. Then he started up again with Zoloft. The zoloft caused bad Sexual SE. I think he took 100 mg/day up to May or June of this year. Then he went on 10 mg Lexapro. The sexual SE diminished significantly after 1 month. His mood took about 6 weeks to improve dramatically - all along dealing with a job loss. He is up to 15 mg Lexapro and is doing well. He also takes fish oil, vitamins, and has to watch out for food allergies. If he watches out he is feeling well.
