efexor to half inderal for anxiety?

Posted by dottywild on November 20, 2003, at 11:11:58

I've been off work for 2 months with stress, anxiety and mild depression. I took 75mg efexor xl for 4 weeks and increased it to 150mg for 2 weeks but felt stacks of side effects but no benefits.

I'm now weaning off the efexor but after telling my gp about a recent panic attack he has prescribed me 80mg half inderal (beta blocker) instead. I have just started taking this and I don't seem to have any new SEs but neither have I felt any benefits yet.

Has anyone got any info or advice about the use of half inderal/inderal/other beta blockers for anxiety?

In general, beta blockers do not help with panic attacks or anxiety. Beta blockers CAN reduce a few of anxieties symtoms such as sweating and trembling. They can also reduce blood pressure.

Xanax is best for panic attacks, but is very addictive. Klonopin is good for anxiety and is not as addictive.

I think Inderal just keeps anxiety from giving you a heart attack, but doesn't prevent anxiety.

Thanks for the info and advice.

One of my big worries is that I believe I am the kind of person who quickly and easily gets dependent/addicted to substances and my gp has avoided prescribing me things that he thinks are addictive.

I really don't know what to do for the best and I'm getting frustrated being off work for so long when I don't feel that the things I've tried so far have made me any better.
