compulsive behavior

Has anyone ever gotten compulsive behaviors- like eating too much and drinking too much after starting effexor? I am on effexor and depakote and have never felt this way before (not to this extreme) and would like to know if anyone has felt this compulsion?

Are you certain (or did someone tell you a story) that these "meds" are going to improve who you are, and not just how you act??? Who you are is a fact!!! How you act and what you do is not who you are... Will you stop sabotaging yourself forever even when you no longer are taking "meds"???

Hi, LB,

I'm afraid I've never been on Effexor, just wanted you to know someone read your post and cares about what you are going through. I'm sure someone else here will have some good info for you regarding Effexor.

Are you eating and drinking more because you feel hungrier or thirstier? Paxil did that to me....I honestly felt hungrier and couldn't stop eating.

And I think Wellbutrin is bringing out some obsessive behavior in me as well.

Good luck,

susan

Hi Lb,
Depakote made me CRAZY for food, and I put on almost 20lbs because of it....I now take Topamax, on which I have no appetite at all...I still take the Effexor, which hasn't affected my appetite either way...
Hope this helps a little.

How do you know that this person does not have an organic disorder needing medical treatment ?

From what I understand, compulsive behavior stems from anxiety. Alot of SSRI anti depressants can initially cause anxiety even if that's what they're being used to treat. I would let your doc know and maybe together you can decide if its really hunger or anxiety or what, then you can go from there. He might give you Xanax or something like that until the initial anxiety passes, or he may want to switch you to something less stimulating altogether. I know some anti depressants can be more stimulating, while some are more calming. Hope this helps.
