Do I have SEROTONIN SYNDROME, please help!

Posted by matthhhh on November 18, 2003, at 21:01:08

Ive been taking wellbutrin 200mg day for about 2 months now. It has caused some minor shakes.

About a month ago I started taking tryptophan and have gradually tapered off the wellbutrin. But since I started tryptophan, I noticed that I feel kind of euphoric, confused, my hands are sweat, and I feel really shaky. Im taking only 2 g of tryptophan/ day.

Does anyone think this is serotonin syndrome?

Have your B/P checked. (nm)

Also, Wellbutrin doesn't really effect serotonin, it does effect dopamine and norepipherine - that's why I suggest the b/p check. I'm unsure how the "t" really works and it's effect on serotonin. If you are concerned, you should really get checked out - soon. Good Luck.

its my understanding that tryptophan is an amino acid that is mildly sedating.
If your tapering off the WB it seems unlkely that you are suffering from serotonin syndrom.
As suggested before check BP. And call your doc.
2 grams sounds like alot to me. Try cutting back. What are you taking it for?

Low blood sugar might be responsible for shakiness and sweating. Euphoria? This can be effect of too high a dose of ADs. Hopefully it isn't Sero. Syn.
I talked to a support group member who had it. It was caused by an incorrect combo of medications. He was near death then hospitalized for months after.

What are the symptoms of serotonin syndrome? I am on a lot of meds. (buspar, wellbutrin, lexapro, neurontin). Does this put me at risk?

Hi. What is this SS you are talking about? I've been on 40mg of Prozac a day for years now. I've never heard of it. I would love any info that you have. Thanks --- Nervz

You can do a search and find info. This article is pretty good. If concerned, discuss with your Dr.

I have had SS and you would know something was wrong before your in a dangerous condition.
I was on a pain killer and Zoloft. SS means too much Serotonin, Hyper brain stem stimulation.
A number of ADs cause tremors, so thats not the only sign to look for. In my case, I didnt sleep AT ALL for 3 days. By the 4th day I had tremors, and I was feeling really wired, but not in a good way.
Called pdoc and was told to discontinue Zoloft. I am very med sensitive and was told this condition is not common.
Anyone with real concernes should call their doctor.
I didnt check my BP but mine is usually low and may not have been a good indicator at the stage of SS I was in.
Hope this is helpful

hey everyone, does anyone know if SS can be caused by tryptophan or ssri drugs used alone? or is it just when they are combined with each other?

Good about B/P. Do ya feel any better today? (nm)

This is a good question to ask a GP. But in my expereience, it is uncommonly fatal. If youre BP and you find an AD is causing you to loose sleep this may be a mild case. I think it is unusual to have a multiple of SSRIs prescribed at one time. I cant speak on trytophan.
It sounds like your doing well. I had tremors from taking WB, but that is not considerd an unusual SE, so I didnt worry. I was also in the 1-2 % that get any SE from WB, or a least all of them. They did go away after a few weeks and now are gone.

Well I got my blood test results and they showed that I have higher than normal levels of folic acid and some higher than normal liver enzyme. I think ive heard before that folic acid increases ocd, so maybe this is making my ocd worse. Im only taking a multivitam though which has folic acid- so i think im going to cut that out and just take b vitamins separate.
The second thing is the higher than normal activity of the liver enzyme. I did some research on it that shows that the amino acid tryptophan increases this, so that lower levels might be better- so ive lowered tryptophan to 0.5 grams per day and ive already noticed improved results. So what does everyone think?

Matt,
Thanks for the update. I was wondering how things were going for you. Sounds like you're on the right track. Keep in mind, the liver detoxes just about all the "things" we put into us. I think those of us who do meds, suppliments, drink occassional alcohol, and even eat things that aren't the best for us are at risk for our liver enzymes to be elevated in response to all we require of our liver.
Using the lowest possible dose for effect is always a good way to go. Sometimes what is considered therapeudic dosing for most folks is too high or too low, individual to indivdual.
Good Luck and hope you are feeling better.
Kelly

Lately, I have been tired all the time;the morning are difficult;it feels like someone beat me with a bat all night long. Its not the first time I have felt this way. For example, I'd always been anemic since I was seven years old. So I know the difference between anemic and lack of serotonin. I also have low blood pressure from time to time. I'm probably the only one in my family that has low blood pressure. Do I need to drink an iron suppliment? And how can I resist the urges to eat chocolate?
