***Nearly everything is toxic! Why!?!?!***

Posted by socialdeviantjeff on November 6, 2003, at 0:24:41

Well, it's me again. Stil having trouble with drugs. In case you never read any of my other sometimes irrational posts, here is the run-down:

4 different SSRI's, 2 TCA's, Wellbutrin, Neurontin, Lithium, and Tegretol. Some alone and some in combos (breaking it down would take too much time),over eight different drug trials. All of the trials were of adequate legnth of time except for two, which were abruptly cut short by severe allergies to the meds, and some others because of major side effects after a couple days or weeks. With every round, there was no imrovment, worse symptoms, or debilitating side effects (even on super low doses).

natural cures (insotil, St johns wort, 5-htp, etc) have done nothing.

I've noticed the more theraputic value a drug or combo the drug would have for me, the worse the side-effects were. That doesn't say much because the help I have received is at best less than 10% improvement after 5 weeks.

I can't find any personal experience that relates to mine. I haven't found any publications either. My pdoc has even said that I am the first person in his 30+ years of practice to reject so many different drugs so quickly and with such acute signs toxicity. He has gone as far to admit that my problems may be incurable.

From what I could find, there a few ideas I've been researching. A lot of these seem pretty far-fetched, and maybe invalid.

possible enzyme problem
asperger's or some other HLA
some milder kind of Anticholinergic syndrome or cholinergic syndrome
Hyperparathyroidism (my PTH is high)

I'm on 200 mg/day Tegretol I take at night and 37.5 mg/day of effexor in the morning. I've only been on effexor for two days, amd I already have nausea, tremors, lightheadedness, amd my heart feels like it's beating faster.

FYI, I have never done drugs. Although I am a pretty heavy smoker, especially in the last 6 months. I rarely drink. I've never OD'd intentionally or accidentally.

Any other ideas? Anyone out there with a similar story? Any other direction I could look? Thanks in advance....

My son is taking Artane (anti Parkinsonian) to control the tics and tremors caused by Schizophrenia and also from any side effects of Zyprexa. It works well and doesn't seem to bother him. This should suppress the tremors. There should also be something available for nausea. Does anyone know what it might be? Lightheadedness might just be an initial effect. If it continues you could reduce the meds by a few mg. to see if it stops.

I wish I could offer ideas, but can only offer sympathy. I have been seeing the same results from many meds. I do know that my body seems to have difficulty clearing many meds out of the system, so by the second or third dose I have an OD-type reaction. This is especially true of painkillers for me.

Sorry I can't offer any ideas, just wanted to let you know you are not alone and I understand how frustrated and helpless it makes you feel.

Well, thanks. It's good to know I'm not the only person with this kind of problem. Sorry to hear about what you're going through, I do understand exactly how frustrating it is. Funny thing about painkillers, Whether it's Lortab, Tramadol, Tylenol, or Ibuprofen, I have to take usually at least 2x the dose or my headaches don't go away. Kinda sucks cause the Tegretol is causing a constant low grade headache and I don't want to take anything to make the side effects worse.

My hopes are with you, stay in touch...

Thanks for the advice. Does the Artane cause any effects itself(cognitive dulling, fatigue, etc)? My pdoc is hesitant to add additional drugs because my reactions are severe, and often paradoxical. Unfortunately, nobody seems to know the cause of these reactions. All of the AD's I have tried are not chemicallly related and use diffrent mechanisms to deliver the effect. I have plenty of info on the toxicity and side effects in each individual drug, but no case of toxic reactions of a person to all the drugs.

I can relate/ a bit of advise

I can relate in many ways. First of all I also have tried nearly every med under the sun and everything just seemed to further dull my mind and numb my feeling. Nausea was never a problem for me, but tremors certainly have been. Secondly I can also relate to the fact that you cannot find a case similar to your own. No doctor has been able to adequetly explain my reactions to different drugs- mostly paridoxical. One thing that worked for my at one time was ADDERAL(stimulant for ADD) It made me feel absolutely like myself again-passionate and energetic as well as calm and focused. The problem was it stopped working when I started drinking(just a few times) and wouldn't work again. However you may want to look into it or something like it for yourself. I believe we may share a similar imbalance but it seems that not too many people with atypical mental problems are exactly alike. I am currenly volenteering for a trial of rTMS(repetative trancranial magnetic stimulation.) It's harmless, but I'm not entirely convined it will make any difference. Also- you're certainly not incurable and your doctor is(in my humble opinion) an insensitive ass-hole for saying so. Sorry if that offends you but you may want to consider a different MD if that's a possibility. Let me no if any of this strikes a chord-BOB
