resperidal for social anxiety

Posted by mayab on October 22, 2003, at 8:15:54

Hi Everyone

I had my first appointment with my psychiatrist yesterday. He decided to keep me on the 20mg paxil for another 2 weeks before moving on to a higher dose, which is fine with me.

He wasn't too happy about the ativan. But after lecturing me about it's addictive potential he wrote out another script for 30 of them. So maybe he was just covering his bases!

My question is that he said that we might try a low dose of reseridal in a couple of weeks if I'm still feeling anxious despite the paxil. Doesn't this seem very extreme?

Thanks again

If it's social anxiety, it sounds stupid. Nardil is the gold standard for social anxiety- put that to him. I'd only use Risperidal after many other failed trials. Risperidal can have very nasty effects.

It might work via the pathway -> Risperdal (risperidone) D2 antagonism -> increase in pre-synaptic dopamine transmission (that's what happens with amisulpride and sulpiride at low doses) -> increase in dopamine -> social phobia/anxiety and dysthymic mood changed. All of the above are just my speculations, but I'd give it a shot instead of all the SSRIs prescribed for social p/a. OTOH there are gold standards: Klonopin, Parnate, Nardil. (in my case Amisulpride ;-)
