I went to a psychiatrist almost a month ago because i have alot of stress and anxiety in my life because of an off and on girlfriend(long-term)and to sum things up he presc. me 10mg valium. A half a year ago a buddy of mine went to the same shrink over similar problems with his wife who gave him lots of stress and excessive worrying and the shrink also presc. 10mg valiums for my buddy on his first visit. Well on my buddys second visit he switched him to 1mg xanax. My friend never switched back to the valiums after that. My question is my second visit is coming up and these valiums have really helped me and i've seen improvement in my self but there is still a fair amount of the stress & anxiety i have and it seems the only way to beat those crucial times with the valiums is by making myself fall asleep probably from taking to many. So i guess the question is will xanax do good for me like the valiums did but allow me to stay awake or focus any better?

for me they are 'much of a muchness'. I prefer valium because for me it doesnt last as long as the xanax though it is supposed to be the other way around. The xanax will do as good for you as the valium.

I have not taken xanax, currently taking Lexapro. I have been pscd. valium in the past, and they just made me cry a lot, also are addictive I believe. Lexapro has worked very well for me for anxiety and depression, and I would think you should be better off taking xanax than the valium in the long run.

I haven't ever taken Valium or Xanax, however I know people who have taken Xanax. The person told me that they found themselves extremely sleepy while taking it. I take Ativan (Lorazepam) for anxiety, and find that it does wonders for me without causing excessive sleepiness.

scorpio,
First please remember that both Valium and Xanax are very high in addiction potential.
Secondly, are you seeing a therapist other than the prescribing physician? I seriously recommend that you do. I sounds to me as though you might need to work through the tough situation rather than escape it.(You mentioned something about "sleeping through it")
Hope things look up for you soon. MamaB

never tried valium but xanax is supposedly 10x's stronger than valium..i have been taking 2mg. before bedtime and i have never had better sleep. waking up refreshed (unlike with ambien and ristoril felt like hangover) have not had any addiction problem with it or withdrawls when i am out
xanax was actually the 6th most prescribed drug in the country last year. get generic xanax. for 60 pills 2mg. each i pay only 30 bucks at walgreens...give it a chance

You might want to try sinequan at night and mabye a low dose of a benzodiazepine during the day.Xanax will make you more tired than valium I suggest Ativan it is less drowsy causing then xanax and valium.
