how long before topamax settles in

Posted by Sabina on October 8, 2003, at 22:59:59

i *have* done searches, so no lectures, and please take pity on me? i am extremely agitated, and it's difficult to go through a gazillion posts when you can't think straight:

can you tell me how long it took before you were functional and feeling better on topamax? i'm not expecting instant gratification, but if i can have a mental goal to hope toward, two weeks, four weeks, whatever, it would help ease me a bit. i can deal with the physical side effects okay...i'm already dealing with fibromyalgia.

i'm still on 25mg daily now going up to 50mg, then 75mg as tolerated within the next few weeks. i'm also on 100mg seroquel which doesn't seem to be calming me appropriately as regards delusions, etc.

last night i was sleeping in the guest bedroom so as not to bother my husband, but i was afraid...unnerved. i was convinced there was someone in the room with me when there wasn't. i called out and asked my husband twice if it was him. god knows, he thinks i've lost it again, and so much for not bothering him!

i'm sorry for bothering you, too; but please let me know how it was for you, please?

What are you taking the topamax for? Everyone is different but the side effects go away in time. When I went from 75 to 100 mgs a day the first few days I thought I was losing my mind. I couldn't remember things at all. It was so strange. But for the most part I am fine now.
You'll be ok. Just know that it takes a little time for your body to adjust to medications and then you will feel so much better.
Best of luck to you,
Nissy :)

thanks so much for answering...it means a lot to me. i'm sitting here all alone tryng to just hold on and tell myself that it's going to get better. i just wanted to know how long it would take before i felt a little better. i was given the topamax for bipolar II. the seroquel alone just wasn't doing the trick for the depression, although it had worked wonders for the anxiety, racing thoughts, and delusions. i'm still agitated, but i don't feel quite as bad as i did yesterday. i know i'm not acting "normally" yet because my husband asked me what was wrong three times over dinner. i was just trying to pay attention to him over the muzak, but it was nearly impossible. i'll just keep taking it and hope for the best.

This is a horrible thing to say, but it is the only thing to say....hang in there girl...
the first side effects of topamax are tough...and like with any other med, you just can't tell when it is going to kick in.

Sorry I can't give you a time frame, but I can say that there are a lot of people in the ring with you.

You scared the crap outta me when I read the start of your sentence, "This is a horrible thing to say..."

Thank God the end of it was on a positive note! I don't feel quite as delusional today, and I'm trying to drink lots of water, and all the other things I've read to do. There are just *so many posts* on here about this drug and I haven't got the concentration right now to plough through them. I really appreciate your replies more than I can tell you. I guess I just feel really isolated and uncharacteristically emotional and agitated. i almost feel like berating myself. like, "you were doing okay on the seroquel. why did you have to mess it up?" i know i really needed something else and that i'm being irrational, though.

thanks *very* much for the encouragement.

Sabina please forgive me!!!

I sometimes just have a very dry sense of humor!!

Every day will get better, and it sounds as if you have a doctor who cares about what is going on with you,so you are in good hands.....

hey, whoa...no apologies necessary! i just meant that in a an emphatic way, about scaring the crap outta me...like how you would talk to a friend who was joking around with you but you didn't yet realize it. also, i was actually very sincere when i thanked you for your encouragement. i'm sorry that it didn't come across in the post! sometimes this medium leaves a lot to be desired! i'll keep you guys posted about my topamax experience. thanks!
