Depakote or Zyprexa - HMMMM

Posted by Momof1BPKid on October 4, 2003, at 1:28:20

Ok I am sitting here at 1 18am and I am trying to figure something out.

My son is on 100mg of topamax (50 in the morning and 50 at night) 7.5 mg of zyprexa (which I will be lowering to 5mg soon) and 1000mg of depakote. I just had this sudden revelation, I could be wrong tho.
Ok for one my son does reallly reallly reallly well when he take 2.5mg of zyprexa in the morning! STRANGE? no! he has like no complaints the school says they never so him so good, that was not happening when he only took it at night!

2nd. Bad news, he was 178 went down to 174, and now is up to 181 after starting zyprexa again, but actually had his depakote increased from 750mg to 1000mg as well. I just had this huge question mark in my mind about his weight gain.
and wanted someones opinion. U know what? my son was on zyprexa before, with trileptal and paxil, last year sometime. but here is the thing...maybe he never took a high enough dosage or maybe he was not on it long enough, but he never really gained alot of weight at all! but I just had a revelation about how he really got fat as soon as he went on the depakote. i know zyprexa is famous for weight gain, but Ever since the switch from trileptal to depakote, i swear he just got fat! i wonder if it was the mix, or just the depakote alone?? DEPAKOTE HMMMMMMMMMMMMM??????????
WHY DOES HE NEED BOTH!
:)
im wondering :)
it didnt do much for him!

weird to me!

has any of you ever been like this? he has like this obsession with his material belongings weird? he has always been like that, he doesnt want people touching his stuff, like someone is going to ruin it or infect it. sounds so ocd to me. thats sometimes why i think the paxil helped, but.. also... i am sometimes like questioning my son's bp diagnosis versus severe anxiety. i know this sounds strange, but why is he so resistant to every single mood stablizer out there? :o and why does he do well when he has reduction in anxiety! hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. like when his bp(blood pressure not bipolar :)) is normal he is so much better and calm! i wonder if he is getting these like anti anxiety effects from zyprexa.
i think the topamax makes him a little extra ansy. but he needs something for this weight! the doc gave me a pamphlet which he told me to mail in and its like having your own dietian its very catered to your personal needs, its called solutions for wellness and they do some kinda diet profile for u. (guess who does this weight help thing ) in the bottom of the form you send in "this program is being conducted on behalf of Eli Lilly and Company.
oh how exciting, wonder why? :)!

Any hey. Eli Lilly if your reading this board??

Just wanted to tell you. zyprexa is a really really great drug, but hey if you screwed up on something, fix it :) add a lil glucophage to the pill and revamp it (name the glucophage something fancy so we dont know what is it) we just know zyprexa works great still and doesnt cause weight gain and all kinda junky stuff :)

:) i cant sleep and im having racing thoughts
but. i just though of something else :)
my son has tics , no not when he started any med, before he started any meds ever and serious restless leg syndrome, weird? ok this was before any ever meds, and when my kid gets over tired he has like really bad joint aches where he extends his legs and arms almost involuntarily (NOT DUE TO MEDS!)

Hi,

I noticed the part where you said that he is resistant to a lot of meds and that you are questioning his diagnosis. If that is the case, I would try and see another doctor. Talk therapy is a very good idea too. For example, I had a lot of obsessive thoughts and was given the option to take Luvox. I took it for 4 days, stopped and then decided to go to therapy more often. It took a few months but the thoughts are virtually gone now-I talked out a lot of the anxiety that was causing them.

So if your son is open to therapy, he should go. Sometimes the meds can't do everything.

Depakote is famous for fat too. It made me realy fat, I took it with zyprexa also. Put 2 and 2 together and you get 4 times the gain.

It can take lots of different doctors and diagnoses to get the right one if your lucky. Basicaly what ever meds or therapy work the best is the answer.

Wow, what a good mom you are!
I have been on both Depakote and Zyprexa. I gained weight on both of them~the most (30 in a month) on Depakote.
I also was on Topamax, and am thinking about going back on it. I lost 25 on that med and it helped my mood, just now realized that.
Maybe the Topamax can be increased to counteract your son's weight gain? OR, if you don't want to add med on med (which I TOTALLY understand), it sounds like your son does well by taking the Zyprexa in the morning. In my honest opinion, I truly think that the Depakote may be the cause for his recent added weight gain. I'm not a doctor.
Maybe you should talk to your doctor about either decreasing the Depakote or taking your son off it all together, you're right, it doesn't sound like the Depakote is doing much for him except making him *fat*, AND Zyprexa, taken in the morning may be all he needs right now since you said 'he has like no complaints the school says they never so (saw?) him so good, that was not happening when he only took it at night!'
Yep~these meds can be 'weird' (more complex than anything), but with the right combo, they can be life saving.
Hope this helped and good luck!!
Kristen

Our 2 grandchildren who we are raising are both on Bi-Polar and ADHD meds. The grandson did great on Zyprexa and Concerta then the neuro Dr. put him on Depakote 2x daily for migraines. The migraines are gone....YEAH.... but we also stopped the Zyprexa...hoping the Depakote would "kill 2 birds with one stone". Well...didn't happen.....moods are worse, behavior worse, does anyone know if the 2 meds together would be harmful? I just hate giving him so much medicine, but it does not make him at all "zoned out"....just normal! Trying to stop the Zyprexa on our Grand-daughter also....because of weight gain. Maybe we should just try a morning dose? Any ideas? Really HATE the meds...but the Zyprexa REALLY seems to help both of them so much. What to do?
