Protein powder - MAOI diet?

Posted by huggave on September 17, 2003, at 12:48:02

Dear all,

anybody with own experience/knowledge regarding use of protein supplement (dry protein powder)when on MAOI (Parnate)? Is it really a "food to avoid"? Today I started the Parnate (+lithium) and I really hope that it will give me som relief in my hard to threat bipolar depression with fatigue, anhedonia as typical symptoms . I have tried lithium with most av the SSRI:s and even some combinations (the most successful Lithium+Effexor+Remeron I had to stop because of side effects)

I used MLO's Protein powder (mixed amino acids, etc) while on Nardil with NO problem...I would still be cautious however.

Thanks for your input cosis and djmmm.

I think I am going to try a very small amount of protein powder in the beginning and try to very carefully increase the dose of it during the first weeks to explore this question.

Hey,

I'm on Parnate and do use a whey-based protein powder every once and a while. No problem. I'm reluctant to try the soy-based ones, though.

But actually I find the stuff too sweet anyway. I just have no desire for sweet food on this med.

Good luck

Hey wsj,

I think I answered one of your posts a week or so ago telling about my experience with it so far. I'll try to sum it up again super quick, though:

atyp. depression: definitely improving
social anxiety: still can't tell
mental clarity: amazing (almost too good, as I lie awake all night just thinking)
SE's: all physical- high BP with hypotensive spikes (kind of opposite of what I had heard), insomnia and consequent afternoon sleepiness the next day (hopefully I'll get a sleep med soon, though)
major bonus: increased libido, more pleasurable sex, happier fiancee
major bummer: no Chinese food

So I'm sticking with it...
