Demerol is a brand name for the narcotic painkiller meperidine. Taking the two together is a big no-no, especially if it's by injection.

Just thought I'd mention why it is dangerous... meperidine (demerol) is an inhibitor of serotonin reuptake. Thus serotonin syndrome can occur with the MAOI + demerol combo.

While Demerol (meperidine) is fatal in combo with Nardil, none of the other narcotic pain meds are - Morphine, Dilauded, Hydrocodone, Codeine. I wonder what the difference is?
I'm on 75mg of Nardil right now and just had surgery. No problems with anesthesia or the Dilauded pain meds. Now I'm on Vicodin and have had no problems with the two.

Actually, all of the narcotics are potentially dangerous when taken with MAOIs. It's an individual thing, I suppose, and different sources say different things. But when I gathered information on this very subject a few weeks ago from several different sources (the PDR, "Mosby's Drug Guide for Nurses", MedLine, RxList) I pretty much got the impression that opioid anesthetics, fentanyl and meperidine were absolutely contraindicated while on MAOIs, and the others--hydrocodone, oxycodone, dihydrocodeine, codeine, morphine, diamorphine, hydromorphone, oxymorphone, methadone, propoxyphene, and tramadol--are to be used with extreme caution.

WOW. I wonder if my docs knew that?? Thank God I'm stilll alive.
