Abilify: Has anyone tried it?

Posted by Mimi on September 2, 2003, at 18:22:06

Hi all,

My antipsychotic is too sedating. I'm on 50mg. of Seroquel at night. I tried Geodon but had lethal side effects. Does anyone have any experience with Abilify? If so, please report. I see my pdoc Friday and would like to drop Seroquel but am slightly worried b/c it has an anti-d effect for me.

Thanks all,

Mimi

I had a very hard time getting any sleep with Abilify. It might work to take it with something else that make you sleep like Zyprexa. I take Zyprexa now with Wellbutrin, works prity well. The Abilify did not mix well with me: Anxiety, 2-5 hours sleep a night, not feeling rested. If you haven't tried Zyprexa and Wellbutrin I think it would be worth a try. 5 mg Zyprexa and 300 mg Wellbutrin, works well for me. I definitly don't recomend the Abilify, if you do you'll know it fast(if it works or not).

Hey Sebastian,

Thank you very much for your input. Yup, I was on Zyprexa for about 6 months but did I ever gain weight. Was glad to switch to Seroquel which is weight neutral. Tried Wellbutrin but had a very bad reaction.

I did go back in time on this site and found that lots of posters could not tolerate Abilify.

I'm definitely not going to try it.

hey sebastian, how much sleep did you usually get a night before you started taking meds?

also have you ever had anxiety problems before the abilify?

man i slept like 14 hours last night on 2.5 mg zyprexa..... this is just crazy. I dunno maybe the celexa is to blame??

Why don't you take 200-300 mgs Wellbutrin with it. Keeps me from to much sleep at 5mg Zyprexa even on weekends and with 60 mgs Celexa. I had sleep problems when I quit Zyprexa cold turky in the past, It was not as bad as when I took Abilify, even when I took Abilify and Zyprexa together. Before medication I had no sleep problems except for staying up late and having to get up for school in the morning. Dude your going to be awfully upset at the $1000 you wasted on one bottle of Abilify.

dude that is a good idea! thanks
though i am already taking a lot of ritalin and it doesn't seem to help that much with sleep
plus my doc probably doesn't want me taking

WHAT I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW IS --
how much sleep did you get before meds?
how much sleep were you getting on zyprexa WITHOUT wellbutrin?
how much sleep do you get now?

man this sleeping 14 hours is just messed up ... definately my biggest problem

>even on weekends and with 60 mgs Celexa. I had sleep problems when I quit Zyprexa cold turky in the past, It was not as bad as when I took Abilify, even when I took Abilify and Zyprexa together. Before medication I had no sleep problems except for staying up late and having to get up for school

okay i always thought that people with SZ or any disorder that needs a large dose of zyprexa (e.g. mania) tended to not sleep much and so they usually went from not sleeping to getting a regular nights sleep ........ i was under the impression i was the only one who slept 12 or 14 hours a day

>in the morning. Dude your going to be awfully upset at the $1000 you wasted on one bottle of Abilify.

dude you might be right :( .... but i dont' think there will be sleep problems on zyprexa + abilify, if so, i can always just take a lower dose right??
like 3 mg of abilify shouldn't be too bad

Before Wellbutrin = Too much way too much
Before meds = Too much, I used to smoke a lot of pot. Befor that I still sleep too much. My whole life I have valued my sleep way too much. I always get ripped out of bed, no matter what I'm taking, ever after/during a 24 hour++ crack binge. Even when I took 15mg Abilify with Zyprexa. 1 hour after taking Wellbutrin mid day/late day/any time day. I love sleep.
Now = I wish I got more but I have to get up for work every day and be there at 8am. Sucks. I always sleep in on the weekends, won't see me up befor 9am even if I wake up early I go back to sleep.
The only time I remember sleeping 14 hours was years ago on the Zyprexa I hated it couldn't understand. I remember days that I sleep for 24, hours think I was taking 15mg Zprexa then. My doctor first prescribed 15mgs at suppertime: What a big mistake, I made movies of myself eating(thats focked up), went right to sleep after a big supper in my brothers bed(sleep till about supper the next night), It was soon decided that I couldn't take 15mgs. 10mgs still sleepin hard, but atleast I didn't sleep all day (the dreaded 23 hour sleeps), 14 hours sounds right Infact thats probable what I remember. I soon got mobile again(out of the house 24/7) working: always late for work 3 years of being late for work three years of ignoring the alarm clock, three years of only 10mg Zyprexa, 3 years I didn't understand 14 hours sleep was a side-effect, 3 years of always trying to denigh that I was tired all the time so my doctor wouldn't give me anymore medicin. Shurly that would have been a bad thing, hated meds still do. Why have I been damed for all these years and other peoples mistakes. Shurly I didn't create any of this, just happened. Bunch of ......freinds...what did they do after that...nothing good just left me to rott on medicine. 7 years.????!!!!

Hope you can read me?

I don't sleep as long on this 5mg dose expecialy with 300mgs Wellbutrin. Can't wait to get off it.

I take it back, it was just as bad, just differently. Things were better on Zyprexa than Abilify. Things were also better on 10 mgs zyprexa than none or for a while 5. It didn't work for me to drop from 5 to nothing, major sleep problems(none). Then when I went back up to 5 mgs it was not enough for me, had to be 10, didn't feel right. 3 years of no break from zyprexa, 0 was a shock!!

My experience was bad (on Abilify), at the time I was hearing of a lot of other bad experiences. My problem was that my doctor wanted me to lose the zyprexa and take abilify, he said they cancel out each other so they could not be mixed. My best experience was taking the 2 together. I did it anyways because I hadn't been sleeping. Told doc he said ok for 5 days then I did Abilify for 2 weeks alone, pure heck. Decided on my own to stop and 10 mg zyprexa. Didn't tell my doc till I saw him next time, I was afraid to take it. Suffered major panic attacks and anxiety, depression, sitting in my room alone; well after I had switched back to zyprexa(weeks later). I was affraid to leave the house when I took the Abilify. Didn't for a week!

Gave in and tried it again 3 months later because I wanted energy, sucked worse that befor.

My 15 yr son was started on 5mg of Abilify and 5 mg of Lexapro after his first episode. This was a bad combo for him. I really don't think he slept at all for the 2 weeks he was on it. He didn't eat much either. The Doc switched him to Zyprexa and he slept like a log and ate also. He gained back the sleep and weight he lost on the Abilify combo. There is good news too, after 2 weeks on Zyprexa his eating habits gradually returned to normal as well as his sleep schedule (8-10 hrs). He was having panic attacks for which the Doc perscribed .25 Klonapin every 12 hrs. In 1 week has gone to eating full meals from when he started his first panic attacks a week and a half ago he would only drink part of a shake for fear of choking. Much progress thanks to AD meds.

Hi, My doc put me on Abilify this summer as a trial for anxiety, and had me up to the highest dose possible, I was a mess. I couldn't move. I was having hallucinations. It was scary. But I have a friend who is on it and she does well, she likes it.
Good luck:-)
Hope to hear how your doc appt goes Friday!
