Neurontin (Gabapentin) experiences?

Posted by bookgurl99 on September 2, 2003, at 23:17:18

I will be seeing my dr. next week to discuss adding an AED to my treatment regime, as what I am using is not as effective as it once was.

My therapist has suggested that I try Neurontin before Depakote, as she has seen people have a better time with Neurontin's side effects than Depakote's.

Does anyone have any experiences -- good or bad -- to report about Neurontin? I'd like to hear about everything from -- does it affect cogntion? to -- Is there difficulty getting it covered by insurance?

My main use for this is migraine prevention.

thanks,

Neurontin had a mild--antidepressant effect/mood stabilizing effect--for me. It made me slightly more relaxed, feel a wee bit better less neurotic (maybe like drinking a glass of wine). However, I didn't find the effects all that strong & like a glass of wine, it made me sorta sleepy. I stopped taking it because I experienced definite word finding difficulties & some cognitive effects.
I dot'n kneed kognitve side ufeekts! Hope it works well for U!

I really dont get it. Do they even think? Or are they just prescription writing robots?

Im not saying it wont help your migraines, but this is one of the newest models.

Sorry about my vent.

To answer you, I think it helped with my "racey head" but I wasnt good for much while on it. It was a depressing drug for me.

The cognitive thing I cant say. I was trying to stop thinking and sleep.

I dont like the fact that I have to keep increasing the dose. For me Im sure there are more straighforward sleep aids.

So, Im switching.

Good luck. Migraines are the worst. I really hope you find something that works .

peace
Ima

For me it's mild, but useful. Helps me stay asleep at night but doesn't knock me out (all my adult life I had problems with night waking--gone!). I also find it relieves the rabid irritability I get sometimes coming off stimulants, and sometimes evens out a particularly depressed mood. Most often, I don't notice anything. No side effects at all.

Hi Bookgirl! Nice to talk to you.

I take just a little Neurontin for Restless Legs (caused by Prozac). It works very effectively for that. No side effects that I can identify. I tried taking a little more at the beginning and my pdoc wanted to know if it helped my mood. I think that it did not.
