Adderall Alert!

Posted by divergent-reality on August 10, 2003, at 0:04:55

The formulation for Adderall (immediate release) has been changed. This may be of interest to those of you who, like myself, may be allergic or sensitive to certain inactive ingredients. I found this out the hard way when I had my prescription filled just recently. The color of the pills has not changed. I took my normal dose on Thursday, July 31, and the following Monday evening I developed eight, dime sized and larger, red, itchy hives! I did not suspect that it may be caused by the Adderall becasue I have been taking it for nearly two years.

I took some antihistamine medication right away just to be on the safe side. I became suspicious on Friday when the hives were still very red, swollen and itchy. I have had this same reaction in the past to Wellbutrin, Serzone, Zoloft, Luvox, Paxil, Celexa, Effexor and Buspar. I had no hives when I took Prozac capsules, but the Prozac gave me racing, paranoid thoughts and made me sleepy, and slowly gain weight that was extremely hard to get rid of until I stopped taking it and even then it took a long, long while to come off. When I tried Remeron it made me very sleepy and gain weight at an astonishing rate, which was unacceptable after my Prozac experience.

I decided to call "Shire" on the remote chance that they had changed the inactive ingredients and to my surprise they had indeed changed them. I was told that they had added some new ingredients and had dropped some of the previous ones. I confirmed this by calling the pharmacy and asking for the lot number and then calling the lady back at Shire to give her the number just to make sure that I had really received the newly formulated Adderall.

I immediately called my PDOC and we decided to try Adderall XR. (This had been suggested by the very helpful lady at Shire) That way I could open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on some applesauce and discard the, potentially offending, capsule. I was more than willing to try this because Adderall had worked so well for me. I had the prescription filled last night and was told that I could take the first dose, 20 mg. the next day, in the morning on Saturday, today. Well that's exactly what I did. Just as the former hives were beginning to flatten out and not itch, almost 3 hours after ingesting the Adderall, applesauce combo, a new and even larger hive, bigger than a half dollar coin, began to appear. I usually feel the burning itch before I see them, which I did while I was out shopping and thinking that all was going to be just fine and that I had averted a pontential disaster in more ways than one.

I was doing so well, feeling really good for so long with my atypical depression and now I don't know what I'm going to do. I can't take the Tricyclic Antidepressants because of a long QT interval. All that is left are the MAOI's and they really scare me. This is very depressing! My reality has been rendered again!

That's interesting... thanks for letting us know.

I have to ask though, can't you use another stimulant? What about Dexedrine, Ritalin, Desoxyn, Cylert, Provigil...?

Thank you for jogging my memory. I have tried Concerta, and it seemed to work fine until the unwanted side effect of spending most of the day running to the bathroom made itself known. My PDOC did mention Dexedrine Spanules as a possibility, but he said absolutely NO to Cylert. I just don't want to go back to the way I felt before. It was almost a year of hives, aching all over, sleeping most of the time, along with being way down in the pit of depression before we settled on Adderall. Such is my reality though and I'll just have to keep trying. I most certainly will check out the above meds that you mentioned. Thank you for responding to my post.

No problem... I just stopped Desoxyn a few weeks ago and began taking Dexedrine Spansules (the generic actually, dextroamphetamine sulfate SR) this past Wednesday. I'm starting at 10mg twice a day for two weeks, then going up to 20mg twice daily, then, if necessary, up to 30mg twice daily after two more weeks. I personally like the Dexedrine better than the Desoxyn... more uplifting and motivating to me.

I can absolutely understand why your doctor would say no to Cylert -- I certainly wouldn't want to go on something that's pretty much a guaranteed liver transplant (if you're lucky) 10 years down the road.
