maoi plus stimulants?

Posted by jmackie on August 1, 2003, at 3:01:03

Can anyone share an experience of combining an MAOI (usually Nardil or Parnate) with a stimulant?

Unfortunately, I can't really answer your question but I just wanted to say that I am also wondering about MAOIs and stimulants. I posted the question a week or two ago and didn't get many responses. I am currently on Parnate and I would really like to try a stimulant for attention-deficit type problems. I hope that some people respond to your post.... I'll be interested in what they have to say.

Oh yeah - my doctor said you really can't to it - too dangerous... and also most of the stimulant warnings seem to say don't take with an MAOI.

Nardil 90mg and Ritalin 25mg Klonopin 3mg have been my cocktail for about 4 months.

i notice that on this web site's "psychopharmocology tips" section is a collection of postings on very high doses of maois and maois with dexedrine and with ritalin, suggesting these are very successful combinations especially with TRD. also worth noting is the thought that the stimulant, while assiting the MAOI, also counteracts the hyptosensive side effects especially with very high moai doses. i will pursue this with my pdoc.

This is an important topic to me - I hadn't seen it posted last week nor did I find it on the psychopharm tips - i must be doing something wrong.

Anyway, I'm currently on 60 mg Nardil plus 100-150mg provigil. The provigil wasn't cutting it so I took 2 weeks off, just started it again, and put coffee (1-2 cups a day) back into my diet. If this doesn't work, I don't know what the next step is.

I've tried Ritalin in the past (in conjuction with Wellbutrin, but I didn't like the Ritalin). I'm a little scared about trying a stimulant stronger than provigil with Nardil, because a few weeks ago I saw a friend on Nardil have a bad reaction after taking cocaine. I know it's not the same but....
