Thinking of switching from Celexa to Effexor XR

Posted by RiaCoul on July 29, 2003, at 21:51:49

I'm thinking of switching from Celexa 60mg/day to Effexor XR (starting with 37.5 daily while still on 60mg of Celexa until I wean down). The primary reason for this is the tiredness and memory issues I have with Celexa. But, reading some of your comments, it seems that Effexor XR's SE's include tiredness, memory problems, as well as sweating. I was on Wellbutrin with the Celexa at one point and I used to sweat just thinking! Any thoughts out there? I don't want to mess with my meds (Celexa has been great for me so far) if I'm only going to have the same or more symptoms.

Thanks to all who respond!

Maria

What are you taking Celexa for? Have you tried Ritalin or Concerta?

I'd like to know how or if Effexor effects your sexuality. That was my main problem with it.

I loved Celexa! Until they rudely took it away from me. I didn't have a single side effect until it turned me into a rapid cycling freak that would only walk on the blue tiles in the hospital.(hence, no more antidepressants for me, ever) I took effexor once, it made me really jittery and by the time I was up to 150 I had hypertension so I had to stop. I wasn't too upset because it didn't work anyway. I always believe in accepting side effects because every med has them. You just have to pick your poison. Good luck

I was on 60 mg of Celexa and then switched to 20 mg Lexapro which I have now been on for 9 months. They have both worked great for my anxiety and depression. Tiredness became less of a problem for me when I starting taking it at night instead of in the morning.

I also eat a serving (one ounce) of dark chocolate in the morning and I mix powdered protein in water in the morning. They both give me energy. Dark chocolate lowers blood pressure, and lowers bad cholesterol. On the other hand, milk chocolate is not as healthy. Dove (made by Mars) is the only dark chocolate bar that currently standardizes the amount of flavinoids in each bar. But I like other brands also.

What you have experienced (SE's) on Celexa will happen on Effexor too. If Celexa works for you, don't switch to Effexor in hopes of diminished SE's. I'm on Effexor, 100mg 3xdaily Non-XR version and I'm tired alot and can't remember anything.

This is very interesting, and not an option I thought of. I will ask my doctor about taking my Celexa at night. I'll also look into the dark chocolate and protein shake in the morning. I believe in the benefits of protein. Thank you.
