Anxiety

Posted by Scooter1 on July 20, 2003, at 7:44:22

Hello, I wrote earlier, however, I think I should've started a new thread instead of use someone elses. I have been on 37.5mg of Effexor xr for 6 days now. I have had SE's. Headaches, dizziness, and nausea. How long does this last? My doc wants me to move up to 75 on Tuesday, however, if I still have effects at 37.5 should I move up? My doc also has me taking 300mg of St. John's wort, which could aggravate the effects of the effexor xr. Has anyone taken a combo before? I have read all these things about now combining anti-depressants. I have talked with pharmacist and they seem to think its o'kay for a while. Just wondered what anyone else thought. My doc has me on this drug for anxiety, however, I have read that others still take xanes to control anxiety. Why if this is supposed to do the trick. Xanex even at a very low dose knocks me on my rear, and i have 3 young kids to tend too....Any advise would be greatful? Thanks,Scooter1

The side effects may go away with time, they may not. It's surely not a good idea to raise the dose if you're experiencing SE's at such a low dose as it is. I'd talk to your doctor about it... perhaps you should hold off a while to see if the side effects subside any.

As for combining St. John's Wort with Effexor, I don't know why your doctor would do that... that increases the risk of serotonin-syndrome (a potentially life-threatening condition).

Wow, your psychiatrist sounds like mine. I had all those effects at 37.5mg of Effexor XR (horrible headaches, dizziness, nausea, numbness in hands and feet) and despite the fact that they never went away for me over a 2 week period, the psychiatrist still wanted to raise the dosage; told me these side effects were just "my body adapting." I'm not sorry to say, I didn't agree and did not continue taking it. The withdrawals, even after 2 weeks, were horrible for me (electric shock feeling, etc.). I suffer from GAD and I think Effexor is just way too stimulating for me; I can't believe you are taking St. John's wort too. I never had any side effects like I had on Effexor with other SSRIs (Luvox, Prozac, Celexa, Wellbutrin), so perhaps talk with psychiatrist about trying something different? I know it's so hard. Good luck.

St. John's Wort and another over the counter remedy, SAM-e, give head exploding headaches to me, especially if I mix them with any kind of anti-depressant. Also, Effexor was impossible for me to take until they came out with Effexor XR (extended release) several years ago. I hope your doctor has you on the XR kind.

Yes, my docter does have me on effexor Xr. My Se's seem to be getting better, however, I am not sleeping very well at night. I go to bed tired, but seem like my mind just wonders and I never really fall assleep. I am weaning myself off of St. John's wort. Today i haven't taken any. I will see how I feel. Although my doc wants me to increase to 75mg today of Effexor Xr. What dose do you take? What types of SE did you have going to the next dose?
